Maybe we'll get to a state where some people wear them to stop spreading whatever respiratory virus they have like in parts of far east... or maybe our culture won't accept that sort of selfless behaviour and people will just bully and take the piss.

I have zero issue myself if people want to wear masks. People having a go at others doing so need to bog off

( Equally, if its not a requirement, people shouldn't have a go at people for not wearing masks)

Spot on - individual choice, as long as it is not nasty to others, is how we should all live. Make our own and accept those of others with a smile (sometimes hidden behind a mask).

Surely though, that would actually mean case numbers are important and we should be doing whatever we can to keep them as low as possible, as 1.5% of 50,000 cases will lead to more hospitalisations than 10% of 5,000.

But not loads more, so gives more space for letting us out of the cage

The only sensible position to take Imo. No idea why it would bother anyone if someone chose to wore a mask if they wanted to

Meanwhile in Oz, under political duress the PM here has announced a 'four step' plan out of Covid life, having finally realised the importance of focussing on hospitalisations and deaths rather than cases, as vaccinations increase (still just over 8% fully vaccinated at the moment). The move to each step will be triggered as vaccination targets are met, but of course, they don't know what they are yet so he wasn't able to give any detail beyond broad principle.

Yeah that’s true. Suppose the restrictions required to keep it to sub 5000 case levels isn’t justified if you look at the bigger picture.

Do you have the supplies of Pfizer / Moderna yet to vaccinate your way out of it? I guess putting vaccination targets are all well and good, as long as you have the means to actually deliver them ASAP.

When is the next general election over there. Is it Morrison (?) surely he'll be getting voted out?

Part of the general confusion here is how they've totally fucked the roll-out timetable at every turn. The communications have just been lamentable. We're running low on Pfizer and don't have any Moderna yet, just AZ (which the PM is saying anyone can get, but everyone else is advising against for under 50's). It's already reached the point where nobody can book their first jab in some parts of the country, because there aren't any jabs to give.

I believe we're expecting a big shipment of Pfizer later in the year (October, I think) and the latest aim is to have all Australians who want it vaccinated by the end of the year.

Early next year. I don't think a date's been set yet. No doubt that's factoring into decision making. Morrison's hopeless but Labor (how it's spelt here) is a mess. I'm not too up on Aussie politics, other than they seem to get through their prime ministers in the most brutal, back-stabbing way every couple of years.

Its not only the 1.5% its the fact that 1.5% are not as sick and dont spend as long in hospital. That need to be considered also.

Not sure if it’s been posted already but this looks pretty good to me:

Would like to see cases start coming down still but it is so much better than last year. Lets just hope we hit a peak soon of these younger people being infected just to keep everyone happy.

Yeah while cases are high there'll always be doubts so if that starts coming down then the picture will look so much better. Wonder how the case numbers will change now the press has picked up on the whole school kids faking their tests thing

Out of interest do you still think there’s a significant number of people in self-imposed lockdown? Even the more cautious people I know will still be attending non-essential retail and socialising with friends, albeit they are following the rule of 6. I’m not aware of people still choosing to avoid non-essential retail out of fear.

From what I'm seeing it's not quite as binary as that. People going out, but less than they normally would. Certainly the case for me and those around me. I won't not go in a shop if I need something, but I also won't just pop in to see what they have. We've gone out to a few cafes but certainly wouldn't go to ones that were overcrowded and ignoring the rules.

If all the capacity restrictions get lifted on July 19 then we likely won't go anywhere for the two weeks until our second doses kick in. But even then I think it's probably fundamentally changed our relationship with crowded places - not that we won't go to them, but we'll be a lot more picky - plus we've picked up hobbies and ways of seeing people when pubs/restaurants haven't been an option that we quite enjoy and want to continue which is time and money that might otherwise have been spent elsewhere.

I don't know about anyone else but I don't care one bit about mild illness. That's just life

If it's mild enough to stop you working your employer will care.

Depends by what you mean by overwhelmed. I dkosee that point but expanding health care capacity is MUCH better option

Problem is our main shortage is staff, not infrastructure. Training up staff takes a long time, and bringing them in from abroad still means some training and it's politically difficult at the moment. And on top of that you have the massive amount of healthcare workers that quite frankly want out at this point. They were horrendously let down by the government on PPE and on policy around triage, they've been working all hours for over a year and putting themselves and their families at greater risk, and the government doesn't seem interested in doing anything to retain them. I think they'd still lose a tonne of people if they offered everyone a 20% pay increase, I think we're in real trouble that they're not even offering that.
