BREAKING: Austria imposes statewide isolation order in Tyrol due to coronavirus variant

The Austrian government has declared state of Tyrol as a “restricted zone” due to the coronavirus mutation. Nobody will be allowed to leave the state without a negative test.

Police will monitor the Tyrolean border with other Austrian states as well as neighbouring countries Germany and Italy.

Tyrol on Monday laid out a range of potential measures to be put into place to prevent the order being made, however this appears to have been insufficient.

Tyrol has seen more than 400 cases of the South African variant of the coronavirus. The variant is believed to be more infectious than known variants, while also being more resistant to vaccines.

But didn't JVT say only yesterday that the SA variant looks less infectious than the Kent variant hence why we don't need to be too concerned that it will become the dominant strain here?

He lives in Austria so I think he’s talking about over there.

Is the Kent variant not a known variant though in Austria? Having just done a quick google search the Kent variant is already in Austria, so would surely be included in the ‘known variants’ the article refers to?

incidentally this is the route Scotland has just gone for

Meaning if you're flying back from a non red list country make sure you fly back to Newcastle and get the train into Scotland. I actually agree that the Scots policy is better but these things need a 4 Nations approach to work.

Yes, the Kent one will become the dominant one now in whole Austria.

But news said yesterday that the South African variant in Tyrol is probably the highest amount outside South Africa.

Reaction from the Government with closures of borders came rather late as there was resistance from Tyrol. In the meantime they told 400 cases have emerged in a certain area of Tyrol and also they discovered two SA variants in Styria, which is another part of the country.

Scientists and Politicians are cautious because the vaccine strategy is based on AZ and Pfizer and nobody can tell how the AZ plays out against the SA variant.

Just had an interesting telephone call with the Home Office Passenger locator form and self isolation helpline.

Apparently it's fine to put down any random postcode where I can be parked up on return to the UK.. and then change it if need be on the PLF.. bonkers

New coronavirus vaccines may not be needed if the current jabs keep people out of hospital, the head of the Oxford University vaccine group has told MPs. As PA Media reports, Prof Andrew Pollard told the all-party parliamentary group on coronavirus the jury was still out on whether new vaccines would be necessary but said scientists and pharmaceutical firms were working to get them ready anyway. Pollard said:

As we move to a point where more people are immunised around the world, or have natural infection, the virus will only survive if it is able to make new versions of itself that can still spread ... despite that immunity. I think we have to come to terms with the fact that that is going to be the future.

Our question at this moment is are we going to need new vaccines? Not to prevent that spread ... but to stop people going into hospital?

At this point, the jury is out on that. All of the vaccines in the trials in those regions where new variants are emerging - we are not seeing a sudden shift where lots of people who are vaccinated are ending up in hospital.

They are still being protected from hospitalisation. We need more data to be secure on this ... but if that’s the case, we might need boosters, we might need tweaks every year, but actually we might not.

We might be generating enough immunity with the current generation of vaccines to stop severe disease.

absolutley, f*** that way of reporting news. It isn’t new to play on fears in the press, but it’s still despicable

Sky News has been appalling throughout this whole thing. Even worse than the Guardian and the Beeb. Sensationalist in the extreme.

CMO in Northern Ireland has said restrictions will not be fully lifted until 70-80% of the population is vaccinated.

Hopefully he means at least 1 jab and then just the adult population. We are at around 22% now.

Have you got a link to this please?

Getting close to that sub 10k now...

Horrible death numbers still, but this thread shows that the death figures today (while clearly still shockingly high) are a hopeful cause for optimism:
