von der Leyen has a really interesting backstory including living under an alias in London because the Red Army Faction were looking at kidnapping her in the 70's, studying economics at LSE then qualifying as a doctor and teaching epidemiology in Germany followed by getting a Masters in Public Health. She's done quite a bit. Don't mention the thesis though.....

you missed the bit about very expensive listing frigates weaponised with lethal watercannons. 😛

I think it's been different rules for different states, and then different counties within states have different rules. Where my brother lives in Virginia the schools have been shut since last March, they're doing the work from home thing and people do social distancing and wear masks...but businesses are open, shops, restaurants etc.

It’s almost like you used to live there 😛

At least now you have a President that is taking it seriously. Hopefully that should rub off onto the people.

It's not. Too many people still  watch Fox News and think that actually trying to take care of people is the biggest crime you could commit in this country. If our education system was better in the poorest places then it would rub off, but its not and the GOP likes it that way. They know ignorance is their greatest weapon to go with along  fear. If those people realized that a higher minimum wage and more accessible health insurance are good things then the gop would never hold office ever again.

I think it's the same deal in Louisiana where my friend is. It never ceases to amaze me when I catch up with her and she talks about going out to bars and stuff. And that's the key thing I think - it's only because it's allowed. My friend is no covid denier, she is always getting tested at least, but the rules say people can socialise like that so they do 🤷‍♀️

Which would happen here too if pubs were open right now.

Just to take this back to basics for a bit. All these 'Vaccine League Tables' & 'Vaccine Nationalism' is really getting me down. Why can't our Government do the decent thing and offer some sort of olive branch to the EU, at least get together to talk things through. Wouldn't that be the decent thing to do?

I'm sick of people smirking at the the thought that we are doing ok and the EU have messed up.

Anyone from the EU, or anywhere else in the world, either vulnerable, elderly or a front line worker can have my vaccine. I am happy to wait. The world needs to be vaccinated not just me.

Fucking virus, I'm off for a run with Ultra Mono on full blast.

it might be the decent thing to do but it won't happen. No country's electorate will thank their govt for putting the people of other countries before the people of the country they govern.

And if the UK were to give away vaccines on the basis of fairness, then the EU wouldn't get a look in. Compared to most of the world its in a privileged position.

I don't agree.

In terms of deaths/million, strikingly the top 16 most affected countries are ALL in Europe (of which half are in the EU).

If we were to be truly meritocratic we should start with vaccinating all old and vulnerable people in Europe.

For once poorer countries haven't been as affected so far, though that's not to say they won't face terrible problems down the line if left unsupported.

I agree. The EU commission being such confrontational dicks about the whole thing isn’t really going to help though.

Yeah for sure there are countries that need vaccines more and struggle to get them more than the EU.

It’s got nothing to do with us. The disagreement is between Europe and AZ and it’s not our place to undermine AZ. Germany was held up as the gold standard within Europe for how they initially handled the pandemic, if we were to give vaccines to anyone we should at least start with places like Brazil, or Africa.

This is the EU’s fault though. I voted remain and I still think we are better off in Europe, but it’s not our job to sort out the EU’s problems anymore.

the contact wasn't properly redacted (all the blacked out words were readable), so out there somewhere should be a piece that goes into those parts, if that's your cherry.

Me, I don't think you need to know the redacted parts. I think 5.1 makes it beyond-dispute clear for what applies for the missing q1 supplies: EU manufacture only.

yeah, but 5.4 is a higher number so wins.

Maybe. I just don't know. There has always been lack of transparency on both sides of the Channel in this process , probably for a good reasons, but even those reasons aren't clear.

The EU isn't in a relatively worse offf position compared to the UK because of less money or political power though. Its because of their vaccine procurement messing up.

Once we've vaccinated our vulnerable and opened up, I'm fine with any spare doses going to Africa, who are MASSIVELY behind elsewhere, first. The EU can afford to buy some from us

That's not the point I was making. I was just saying that European countries need the vaccine more urgently than developing countries and more than other developed countries too. Europe has been hit hardest.

Which is unusual, as in a typical crisis it's the other way round.

or alternatively, Europe has the public health infrastructures to accurately measure the true impact of covid.

I reckon there's at least some of that in the mix even it can't be applied to all.

Genuine question as I don’t know, but do we know the full story in a lot of developing countries? Many of them can’t have any sort of testing capability that’s fit for purpose in comparison to the EU.
