I’ve got an 8 year old and a 3 year old. Both ok on the surface at the moment, but after the last long lockdown I really worry about their mental health. At least older kids and young adults can (to an extent) socialise online.  But the little ones need to play with kids their age and neither can really manage zoom or FaceTime. Lockdown is for the greater good, and I wouldn’t want them in school / nursery if it’s not safe - but I desperately hope they are allowed to play with other kids outside before Easter.  I really worry about the long term effects of so much isolation.

Same here. Mine are 6 and 3 and it’s really starting to take a toll on the eldest now. Whether it be the big things-missing Grandparents and now friends at School, or the little-not been able to go to a soft play for nearly a year he’s fed up. Last few days he’s randomly burst into tears once a day at something seemingly innocuous. I think it’s just stress.

Who would accept the current restrictions being in place (or possibly harder restrictions) until June or July if it meant going for an Australian style covid zero approach?
As close to normal life as possible with some mask wearing and common sense distancing.

I would rather another 6 months of this to have my life back rather than another 2 or 3 months and only part of my life back.

I don’t think we could get to Zero in that time. I can understand trying to keep things tight for a while to give the Vaccine program room but the Zero Covid ship sailed a long time ago. Plus the other thing is I don’t think you’d get the population as a whole to buy in, there’s going to be a real drag on Compliance as Vaccinated numbers rise.

Sorry to hear he’s so stressed.  It’s such a rubbish time for them.

Mad that there is still opposition to this- who is flying in who we actually want here right now? Of course it should be everyone!

There should always be opposition to pretty much anything in a Democracy. It’s god that there’s a debate.

As a leftie I’m asking-why do the Tories suddenly want to take these powers now? Numbers flying are so small (one day last week Glasgow Airport had exactly 100 passengers go through the terminal many of which will have been domestic anyway) and mainly in professions you’d need to exempt. So what’s their motivation? Nobody trusts them, right.

Whats the exit mechanism? Who controls it? Giving any Government, but especially this lot and especially Patel, such potentially repressive powers is risky. Is there a date, an automatic end point based on e.g.Vaccinations?

In practical terms (and I declare a vested interest as I work in Air Traffic Control) there’s a debate between benefit and cost. If this is something indefinite and will stop flying this summer, Shapps and Sunak will be querying the cost. It’s not just Airlines that will be in trouble but Airports. Some will need bailing out or they’ll close and greatly damage their local economies (they support Taxi drivers, Retail and Bar Staff, Baggage Handlers etc). They might need to renationalise the Air Traffic system which will be messy and very expensive. What will they need to do to support the Tourism Industry here (Staycationers won’t cover the missing revenue from inbound Tourism).

All this needs debating. Nothing is ever win-win.

Poor kid. Hopefully things start to improve soon and they can get schools back asap.

Would it be just for flights? What about ferry arrivals? Could hotels around the ports handle the numbers/process? How do they ensure you stay in the hotel? Do they feed you?

Then there is exceptions, hauliers, business travellers, people travelling back for urgent medical care or to see dying loved ones.

Then there is people like myself who actually can't afford to stay at a hotel for 10 days at my expense, and actually we are only returning in the hope of finding some work, as am forced to return due to the now enforced 90 day Schengen rule.

Wonder if they would prefer people not to travel at all and come to some agreement to extend that due to current situation.

There are a lot of UK residents out in Portugal, Spain, France etc that will be returning too in their motorhomes, some like us who live in them full time. Maybe could have quarantine campsites instead.

I honestly can't see them bringing a blanket ban in for all travellers.

Yeah, despite all the news suggesting it's a done deal, I suspect they will backtrack.

Probably quarantine for South Africa and Brazil only and that they will 'keep it under review'

They haven't been able to even check more than 3% of people's quarantine forms, so I don't them being able to actually quarantine 100% of people.

Or they might make it foreigners and celebrities only, which has polled well in focus groups.

They need a really accurate test that gives you results immediately...and just quarantine anyone who gets a positive test result...not sure if such a test is possible.

Hancock: We need to close the borders and lock up anyone arriving in the country...

Patel: Yep, definitely.

Hancock: ... until all this covid stuff is over.

Patel: Co-what?
