Who’s responsible for the new variant ? Why have we got so many infections that have caused it ? .... keep the infections lower than the new variants have lower chances of occurring .... so they are essentially deflecting tactics to blame a new variant ...surely that’s the fault of the govt ... by not shutting things down quickly enough ?

Pretty much, it links back to the 2nd lockdown being relaxed too early as well.

Wasn't it first around in the summer though?

I agree they are probably using it to excuse their own bad actions. But I also think there is an element of it being something which has come out to make things worse needing a stricter lockdown. If it hadn't of mutated, things would probably be better.

And fwiw, I think they aren't reporting it earlier or later for their own political ends. This stuff should be said asap. Of you act like China and keep stuff hidden is worse...

Crazy. Some of these people are infected and planning to quarantine...but now will just infect others in the queue.

Other countries seems to be able to run their airports without this.  Why don't they learn from others and check the PCR forms at the baggage reclaim which would cut the queue time in half?

Yeah guys I’m not doing well. Things just feel pretty bleak at the moment and I feel like I’m distracting myself in work, games, tv shows a bit more than normal. I’m usually someone very invested in the news but I’m avoiding it like the plague.

Someone very senior at my firm who I’ve worked with a lot is in hospital with COVID. Just feels a bit disastrous.

Hold on dude. Vaccines are here and they work. And as I posted earlier on the thread, Israel seems to show they work very well. All will be well in a few months

Yeah, it's rough...I think probably a good idea to avoid the news if getting too much, do something you enjoy for a while. We're really in a crucial moment in this pandemic...we have these vaccines, but we also have hospitals full of covid patients and a lot of death. But, things should start to improve soon, and restrictions will start to be lifted, but I think it's going to take some time. And even by the summer we may still have a number of restrictions in place. We'll get there.

I feel exactly the same except I am the opposite and find myself on here and following the news more. It doesn’t help.

It feels as if everything is negative at the moment, with a new strain weekly and constant question marks regarding the efficacy of a vaccine (ie the one positive bit of news now constantly being caveated). Government are now being more explicit in delaying the lifting of restrictions with no clear end in sight. And this is only the third week.

Evidence from Israel is that one dose gives great protection from Pfizer

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm finding these low-data Israel stories really frustrating.  They say they're going to publish the actual data soon, none of it has enough information to really draw any conclusions.  We need the actual data, otherwise we'll be stuck with nonsense like the suggestion that the Pfizer trials showed 2 shots was 40% more effective in saving lives than a single shot, which is a conclusion you could draw if you only get headline figures, but is really not the case.  The biggest takeaway from this article is this  “The question of whether the first shot is enough will not be answered out of Israel,”

Matt, I'm with you mate, you're not going through this on your own. I'm with you on the news and I'm with you with the friends and family cove stuff.

We're really on the home straight now.  I know it's a longer road than many of us had hoped for a few years ago, but we are getting out of it now.  Cases are coming down, vaccinations are going up.  It's getting safer, warmer and brighter every day.

I hope your colleague recovers soon.

Having worked with Environmental Health in a previous life I’m pretty confident they would have been useless - given their inability to deal with moderate change and challenges when times were good.  Best leave them to issuing stickers for hygiene ratings.

I was on a mega downer yesterday and then Liverpool lost which added to my misery but today sun was shining and walked my dog 7 miles and then went out on my bike and did 15 miles and felt much better. So I think my point being is look after yourself ( not in a selfish way) and do thinks that you enjoy doing and stay away from the news for a few hours 👏👏👏

You've got this. It is literally the middle of winter, there's a reason the song is called "in the bleak mid winter".

But you know what you made it through today and posted on here sharing that you're not feeling great so you're not alone. And that's a massive fucking win!

I was also on a mega downer and then Liverpool lost which cheered me up no end! 😄

Only joking (not joking) 🙂

This is England only but clearly a huge amount still coming from the 75+ category who will all have one dose soon enough.

Time will tell!

Personal view, I hate this graph as it It gives a false view of the  hospital problem.  It demonstrates well just how bad this affects the older population but it misses the point that there is only a finite amount of hospital beds and ICU places which rate per 100k doesn't convey. They'd be better off doing a percentage split with actual numbers. Last time i looked it was about a 63/37 split for over 65/under 65 with still 1500+ people everyday under 65 being admitted.

In saying that, it's obviously going to be a lot better in 6 weeks once the +75 cohort is vaccinated, but it's not going to rapidly fall away the way you might think from this.

How many 85+ people do you think can cope in daily life without at least some sort of support from family or care providers? Be it care, cleaning, washing, food shopping etc. It's the main reason why the whole 'lock down the vulnerable/elderly only' argument doesn't work.

or carers taking it in seems more likely ... lots of agency being used to cover the home where my friends aunt and other friends mum are ... and now have it .... they still haven't sorted this protection ring around them 😞

Of course - hadn’t really thought of that! Naivety on my part as my family members who were lucky enough to make they age were more or less self sufficient right until they passed, but obviously appreciate this isn’t the norm or the case for the majority.

20% of covid deaths is covid caught in hospital.

Those aged 85+ are a big proportion of those in hospital for non-covid stuff.

I'm sure you can join that up. 🙂

Thanks all - yeah last week there were a few things with COVID that just really got me down.

I love my job, and I imagine that I’m not alone in this, but I virtually live to work at the mo as it’s the only thing bringing some sort of stability. I hate to say it, but work gives a little bit of an escape and the hours pass by.

This week was a kick in the balls as it looks like the time I’ve taken off for summer holidays won’t be going anywhere. Hard to explain as well but I’ve got to take a certain amount of time off before the end of April (year end stuff) and it’s just bleak because I really should be using this time to do something fun!

Of course I’m not alone in this but it feels like at the moment it’s really hard to have any kind of a break from this mess. Very grateful to still have a job, but it is hard when works the only solid thing going!

I’m the same - the cancellation has made me spiral with the realisation that this year is looking like it could be the same as last year, or worse.

That’s why I need to hold on to the hope that things will improve during this summer.

I hope you feel better soon.

I was speaking to a friend yesterday and he said the thing he’s struggling with the most is the lack of an exit strategy and how it felt like it was a year away from this shit ending at the start and it still feels that way now.

However, it does feel like we’re at the beginning of a very long end.

I appreciate it’s difficult, especially with the new variant, but I think Johnson either needs to come out with another Nando’s chart-style strategy for when cases are low enough (some road map for the future) or allow some kind of socialising - even if it’s meet one other household outside with distancing in place - as the collective mental health struggle of the nation is starting to show.
