Quark
It's not that far from the local railway station, but it would be a bit of a schlep tbf.

We are always a bit limited when it comes to rural destinations. I am tempted, though! We probably won't book a proper holiday until early autumn anyway, if at all, as avoids the summer price hike and we don't have kids. Doesn't stop me looking and dreaming, though! There's some amazing deals out there for long haul too. Bus service in the Lakes is actually OK. Less so out of season. Very expensive though

FestivalJamie
Just seen on Tagesschau.de that Pfizer is cutting deliveries/supply for Europe. Don’t have a clue if this affects the uk too? Edited January 15, 2021 by FestivalJamie

Toilet Duck
24 minutes ago, Chef said: @Toilet Duck - what are you thoughts on this new variant from Brazil? There seems to be some concern in the media so is it justified or one to file away in the box that says its completely normal for a virus to do this and carry on with your socially distanced day? Howdy, It's still too early to say really. It has the E484K mutation that the SA variant has, and lab studies on this alteration have suggested that in some cases, it can reduce the activity of antibodies from people who have recovered. In some cases it did nothing, in others, there was a 10 fold reduction in neutralising activity. How all of this impacts on vaccine efficacy, we still don't know and whether it means that people that were previously infected could get infected again, we don't know that either! In combination with other alterations, some of these spike variants do seem to have greater affinity for the ACE2 receptor, suggesting that they could be more transmissible. Modelling of outbreaks where the variants have predominated seems to back this up and real world data is now starting to fit the models. For example, the UK variant arrived in Ireland before Christmas, we still got a massive spike in cases due to socialising over the period and the UK variant only made up about 10% of those...however, it is replacing the other variants now by outpacing them (somewhere around 50% of cases in Ireland now are due to the UK variant). So, keeping a lid on the new variants is probably a good idea until we find out exactly what they mean (it should be noted that current restrictions in Ireland are the same as for previous variants and while the proportion of cases due to the UK variant is rising, absolute case numbers are less than half what they were last week, so what we did before still seems to work now...we just have a big peak to climb down from!). So far, there no evidence that any of them cause more severe disease (thankfully), but, a more contagious virus can have an even bigger impact on hospitalisations and deaths simply because more people catch it, so we need to be careful. Based on the wide repertoire of antibodies and immune cells stimulated by the vaccines, I suspect that they will ll still work fine for the new variants, but the good thing is that the new genetic vaccines are easily altered if we need to. There's ongoing trials of the existing vaccines in places where these variants are circulating, so within those trials, we should start to see a signal for specific variants if they do indeed escape immune targeting. Prudent to be careful until we know better basically!

zahidf
Lockdown restrictions in Wales may begin to be relaxed at the end of the month if rates continue to fall, the Welsh first minister, Mark Drakeford, has said. Drakeford said the current arrangements would be reviewed as is expected by 29 January – the end of the government’s regular three-week cycle. He said: If things over the next two weeks continue to head in the right direction the cabinet will decide if there is any headroom for us to begin the process of lessening the levels of restrictions we face. But he added: We would have to be certain that improvement is reliable, sustainable in order for us to begin the journey of lifting restrictions. Me and Mrs Q did 4 days there back in Aug and it's really lovely. Obviously I'm a bit biased, but I'd recommend it regardless. Like anywhere up there you get more out of it when the weather is good just because of being outdoors and making use of the garden and your verandah bit, but it's proper cosy too.
