Maybe the US will drop food parcels.

There's probably already a queue of people seeking refuge into Europe, probably a few spare rubber dingies down Dover way to help us escape.

Unfortunately the U.K. and more specifically England is a conservative hole and they'll probably vote the Tories in again anyway.

Yep. I was saying this to someone else, without the support of Scotland, Labour will never win an election.

And as Scotland seems to not want to vote for anything other than SNP, I don’t know how Labour can captivate enough of England and Wales.

The next election will be the Tories pushing that a vote for Labour is a vote to break up the union.

There's the slimmest possibility that the next few days will be such a shitshow that it finally acts as a wake-up call to extend the transition period.

If not, then we deserve everything that's coming to us.

This is my hope too. But it's a small hope at this stage.

I also really, really hope that Boris wasn't exaggerating their fears about the new variant to justify the Christmas u-turn. As that has been a spectacular self-own if so.

Thank u Australian professors. A phrase like "no definite evidence that this is a significant change." can be ominous these days though.

Quote

Australia’s chief medical officer, Prof Paul Kelly, said the UK strain, known as the N501Y mutation, needed to be put in context.

“There has been thousands of mutations of this particular novel coronavirus,” Kelly said. “There is no definite evidence that this is a significant change. There has been more transmission in recent times in the south-east of the UK and that may be associated with the virus.

“The infectious agent has changed a little, but a lot of people have been moving around in south-east England and have been until the recent lockdown. It is also winter.

“In terms of what that means for people coming from the UK, everyone coming from the UK is going to 14 days of hotel quarantine.”

Assoc Prof Linda Selvey, a public health physician and an infectious diseases epidemiologist at the University of Queensland, said while the quarantine system had not proved 100% fail-safe in stopping transmission, “it is still largely protecting the community”.

“In addition, it is quite likely that the variant has already spread further than the UK, particularly as other countries are not doing the same amount of genomic sequencing as in the UK,” she said.

Neil has it spot on here - not saying the new strain has been fabricated, but it’s certainly been hyped up to suit their Tier 4 agenda. You can imagine them plotting this in their Tory HQ thinking they have nailed it - we made it seem like there was no other option but to cancel Christmas.
Pretty sure when they made such a big deal of this, that they hadn’t even though of the possible knock on effects we are seeing now.

Yep they made more of it that it is so that they didn't look like dicks for u-turning and it's backfired on them spectacularly.
