I think that’s where most of us who follow it closely are at. We know what the polls say, and what that means historically. We know national polls don’t really matter in state based contests, but provide a good guide and candidates have won from worse positions in the past. We know the state polls had some misses last time, but the pollsters think they have the right adjustments, and regardless they still aren’t as close as 2016. Even with a genuine October surprise, the undecideds that all flowed late to Trump last time aren’t there this time around.

But still…. It’s 2020. Even with all the evidence out there, I can’t shake the overwhelming feeling that something is going to go wrong. Even a win on the night (or days after) and I’ll still be expecting faithless electors to change votes at the electoral college vote.

Spot on. There always the nagging doubt but as every day passes the hole grows even more.

Who’s going to be up watching that through the night?

Hopes are rising that a coronavirus vaccine will be approved by the end of the year, with healthcare workers receiving their first dose in early 2021.

Dr Anthony Fauci, the US’s leading expert in infectious diseases, said on Sunday it should be known by the end of November or early December if a vaccine was safe and effective.

The Irish government added to the growing optimism that a vaccine would soon be available.

“I’m increasingly optimistic, as is government, that we will see a vaccine approved in the next couple of months and that in the first half or first quarter of next year it’ll be possible to start vaccinating those most at risk,” Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s deputy prime minister, who is also a doctor, told RTE radio on Sunday.

But that’s not quite the case - if restrictions are relaxed for one day only, then to pass anything on to family members, somebody within that household would have to have Covid on 25th December and be also be in the actively contagious stage.
Therefore the laws of averages would say that it is much more unlikely to happen in this instance than if people met up multiple times a week/month etc. And families could take precautions the weeks leading up to Christmas Day, and can essentially self isolate if they wanted to reduce the risks even further.

Not sure people are going to self isolate etc. (People that work in pubs/restaurants/shops aren't going to give up 2 weeks wages and risk getting sacked to spend 1 day with family in this time that is already a strain on jobs) If it's given the go ahead it will be a free for all and everyone will do as they please and have mass family gatherings. Besides it isn't just Christmas day is it? Lots of separated families. For instance me and my partner would usually have 2-4 Christmas days depending on which parents we spend Christmas day, boxing day and so on with.

Maybe downplaying things? Doesn’t seem like this government at all but could be because he knows the moment people hear ‘vaccine’ they will think it’s all over, forgetting about the months of rollout?

😕 damn man, are you close with your family?

Actually, we are fairly close....but we're not going to see each other this christmas, and we're ok with that. My mum's birthday is on new years eve and she's turning 90 and we were going to have a big get together for that, family over from US and stuff...but even that we've postponed till next summer.

But, I also think that there is a lot of pressure to have that special christmas...and in my experience they're not usually that special.

Time difference here is close to perfect. Leave day booked.  Coffee and bacon rolls while the East coast results come in. Some beers by the time the Midwest closes, and  an afternoon of getting drunk regardless of the result.

Absolute joke if this happens. Can't do anything but because it's Christmas lets go and spread the disease. Either restrictions stay put or the restrictions are lifted. Not oh let's do it for one day because of the day.

Whilst it's true that reducing restrictions for Christmas will increase the spread it is only one day. Restrictions that gave us a day off every week would be more effective than no restrictions and restrictions that jusf give us Christmas day off are better than a regular break.  So the question is whether the increase in spread from a single day is worth giving people a better Christmas.

I don't have the answers, I suspect a completely normal Christmas with people criss-crossing the country to meet up with large intergenerational groups in indoor settings would be a superspreading disaster, but a slight easing of restrictions to allow small groups to meet up in areas where household visiting is currently prohibited seems like it might be worthwhile.

Yeah this follows all info I’ve been seeing so far. However the 26th Oct was the date of the Hillary emails were announced in 2016 so it’s not over yet. I don’t want to get complacent at all been burned before!

Their ‘smoking gun’ this year seems to be the Hunter Biden sex tape/pictures that got released yesterday, although it’s completely backfired on them as most social media has stopped it’s spread due to it essentially being revenge porn, and the mainstream media hasn’t picked it up because who gives a shit? Conservatives are trying to spin it as child porn, which it clearly is not, and also Hunter Biden isn’t his dad, so where’s the real controversy?

Still wouldn’t be foolish enough to call it a lock in Bidens favour, but it’s certainly looking good right now, and will hopefully be enough that Trump can’t spin any bullshit on November 3rd about mail in ballots.

I think the one thing everyone needs to be for Christmas is sensible, I know many who won't be but me and my family will try to be as much as we can. Thankfully there will only be 6 of us this year as we alternate between my mum and dads side. There should ordinarily be 13 of us for Boxing Day which we very obviously won't be doing but as I'd said before we've been planning multiple scenarios of what to do when. Sadly the most I can see the government doing is advising people to use 'common sense' and have an amnesty on children being part of the rule of 6.

They should be starting to build up to it now. Constant messaging about keeping numbers sensible, isolating as much as possible beforehand, being very careful round the vulnerable, masking up, minimal hugging, open the windows etc.

Some positive vaccine news floating around this morning.

Really starting to feel like we're building up to something in terms of an announcement relatively soon.

I don’t think the three above posts are irreconcilable with one another btw. I’m becoming convinced that approval of both the Pfizer vaccine and the Oxford/AZ vaccine are just a matter of weeks away. I think both will be approved perhaps by the first week of December, given that the data should be presented a week or two before that and then there’s all the regulatory red tape that must be navigated.

That would mean that the only the absolutely most high priority groups will get vaccinated in 2020, e.g. healthcare workers. Perhaps Q1 2021 will still be a very heavy focus on the vulnerable and healthcare workers, whereas ordinary Toms, Dicks and Harry’s like myself are more likely to be getting a needle pumped into our arm in Q2. I am more hopeful than I’ve ever been of significant normality by the time the schools finish for summer holidays next year.

Spot on, and I think that’s all anyone’s really asking for. You’d be an absolute fool to think big office Christmas parties where people accidentally kiss a co-worker and make a fool of themselves before inevitably getting chucked out of some shite nightclub at 3am for fighting are going to happen, but at the same time we’d all still like to be going round our mum’s for turkey and some Christmas pudding on the 25th itself.

If Biden wins, I hope there’s a good Vaccine announcement the next day. That would be glorious.

Of course he did. When Covid is done they’ve absolutely no reason to let him keep his job. He’s gone and will get the blame for everything.

Agreed. A couple of days relaxation around Christmas would probably do wonders for Compliance in the fortnight before in fact.

I'm planning to stay up as long as I can but doubt very much I will make the whole night!

I’m going to go to bed early and set an alarm for something like 3am then camp on the sofa to watch it all unfold. You should do it that and we can watch at the same time!
