I’d argue that there’s very little difference between tier 2 and tier 3 tbh. Not many people want to go to the pub with their own household.

Tier 3 is no pubs and as I say no household mixing anywhere has been the case for up here for months... this is why there is pushback as businesses and people have been struggling all this time

Now it's a big deal cos London have to do it now

What can you do in tier 3 but not tier 2?

Go to a pub/bar with your own household

Socialise outside

Go to the gym

I’d argue the difference between 1 and 2 is way more significant

I think his point is that Tier 2 is worse because places aren’t shut but people won’t go out and Gov support isn’t available? I’m not saying I agree with his point as it does seem to be what you say about London.

Maybe but reading the tweets it comes across to me that the London tier 2 is far worse than Manchester going into Tier 3 so should have more emphasis... I don't want London feeling these restrictions as it's shit but feel like Peston only make a deal cos it's closer to home :(

Tier 3

Shut down pubs, gyms, leisure, casinos, bookies and there are other things too

No overnight stays

No mixing with households anywhere includes gardens, parks and hospitality

Yep sure it's worse at tier 1 and 2

Tier 1 is the dream

Tier 2 is just as bad as tier 3 though

Not for the businesses and people's jobs being fucked up it isn't... Tier 2 open Tier 3 dole

Manchester measures actually relaxed under tier 2 thus week as you could see people outdoors in gardens and hospitality.  For the months before we couldn't so forgive me if I don't agree with your assessment

Peoples jobs are worse under tier 2. With tier 3 you get a bailout from the government. Tier 2 hospitality is open but no one goes, so the companies will go bust.

Unless of course they don’t bother enforcing the one household rule.

I mean it’s very arguable whether the punishment fits the crime in London. Infection rates in the north are 3-4 times higher than that of London, so I’m not really sure what London has done to deserve getting put on a household ban.

I don't think looking at this in terms of punishment and what certain boroughs deserve is in any way useful. No one is being punished. They are trying to slow the spread of a virus. Arguably the methods might be shit but punishment is not the goal.

Also I really wouldn't take Peston as representative of the views of most Londoners. I live in London and I'm fully aware that people in the affected northern areas over the summer (and Midlands too) have had a shocking time of it. Under no illusions at all that we have it worse.

So greater Manchester has been under tier 2 for months and yeah business has struggled for sure.. did you not realise we've been under this shit measures for so long?

The tier 3 is like a kick in the balls for us as businesses will get zero custom and even worse support, which is exactly why our leaders are opposing this

Tbh I'm not feeling your argument given I'm located in Manchester on these measures for months it's shit situation and it's about to get a whole lot worse

Tier 2 is not worse than tier 3 IMO so we'll have to agree to disagree on this point I'm afraid

I would never do that!! It's his stance that's all, London goes into Tier 2 and he realises the gravity if it now it's home :(

That's not actually the case. It's being written like that everywhere on all the news reports but this is on the actual gov.uk website defining Tier 3:

You may continue to see friends and family you do not live with (or have formed a support bubble with) in groups of 6 or less in certain outdoor public spaces, such as:

  • parks, beaches, countryside, forests
  • public gardens (whether or not you pay to enter them), allotments
  • outdoor sports courts and facilities, and playgrounds

That's the tragedy. The time has been wasted.

We're doing better in terms of understanding the disease and treatments, and we have a lot of tests available even though that all got a bit screwed up....but in terms of compliance, national unity, and economic and social resiliance to lockdown restrictions we are in a much worse place.

Every day since the changes were announced its pissed it down and I mean bucketed it down at least once a day.

Factor in that many council owned public parks and the like close at 'dusk' so while people can, and will see people in these places it's not exactly desirable, neither is a private garden but it at least removes the temptation to go inside.

The band stands, bus shelters and any other covered outdoor space will never have been so popular.

Just to put it into perspective whilst you’ve been living with those restrictions for months. As soon as they’ve come into place in London the person you’re discussing this with has decided to move to another part of the country (possibly spreading the virus) before the restrictions come into place.

I see where you’re coming from but I think most other people in London understand how it’s been for you guys up there and really empathise with the difficulties you’re facing. Hopefully you can get the financial package from the Government in the next few days!

But even if not enforced these restrictions do get message across to people that need to be careful, it's still out there. Definitely noticed people being more careful,  Not sure if enough to reduce transmission of course as some people obviously think they know better, or don't care, or maybe don't believe it, and also people still go to work/school/uni etc...

Completely agree.

You will all have to forgive me as I’ve not been on these forums too much of late but is the general consensus that the lack of development of the track and trace app the main ‘time waster’ throughout this period (March-now)?

Yeah pretty much. It wasn’t helped by the government telling people to go out and eat out etc when in part of the country the virus was still very much prevalent.
