As a long-term lurker I would like to mometarily un-lurk to say that the recent negative comments posted by some about this thread do not represent the views of all lurkers.

I *love* this thread exactly as it is with all it's waffle, on-topic and off-topic meanderings. Please don't change. It's the highlight of my day catching up on what's been going on here and has helped keep me sane during this awful year.

A big thank you to all the regular posters who've done the 'heavy lifting' to keep the thread active and long may you do so!

Although one death is always one too many in any case, the published statistics of fatality by covid-19 that came out yesterday were slightly bemusing. 307 fatalities by the virus of those without any known underlying issues, under the age of 60, and the average age of fatality by covid-19 being 82 in the UK.

Should the focus be changed to mainly those of an older age and who are potentially vulnerable to the virus? I can’t see a world where we have to live without this now, and 6 months cannot come and go and there be talks of a 3rd/4th/5th wave and so on surely?

I appreciate that huge mistakes were made first time around and the government don’t want a repeat of that, whilst trying to balance the livelihoods of the population and the economy, but at what stage do we accept the virus is here to stay?

Although in the grand scheme of things the lack of concerts, potential festivals being cancelled for another summer and fans not being able to attend matches are minuscule in the fight to save as many lives as possible, these along with many other factors will cripple livelihoods and may cause further pain and detriment in the future.

I’m all aboard trying to mitigate the second wave we’re now supposed to be gearing up for, but I think if we’re in the same position in 6 months (and a whole year on since it’s introduction to our lives), a lot of people will become fed up completely and I wonder if businesses will take matters into their own hands and begin to operate on full capacities, book artists for shows etc. And allow people to decide if they feel safe enough to socialise or not.

As a lurker, I concur.

I've never waffled

ever

I'm holding out for a vaccine early next year , even if they can only get it out to the vulnerable at least they will be protected and everyone else can start enjoying life once again

Yes, and I think the government is doing the same.

The problem I have with this is it treats death as the only thing to be avoided. What this statistic doesn’t show is how many people became seriously ill, required hospital treatment but recovered. Take Boris for example he’s in mid 50’s and although a bit overweight, realistically he’s probably similar to a lot of men in their mid 50’s! I dont think he’d be someone shielding. Yet he became seriously unwell and by looks of things hasn’t 100% recovered. Yet isn’t taken into account in your stat. If we had a surge into hospital and ICU the system would become overwhelmed and more otherwise ‘survivors’ would die as a result. So you can’t be sure that it’s ok to let it run through society in the way you’re suggesting.

The virus isn't going to go away regardless of whether a vaccine appears anytime soon. The whole lockdown scenario should be (and is) geared towards preventing the infection rate from turning into something that overwhelms the NHS and treatment of patients, whilst the rest of the economy has some sort of chance to recover.

Its very difficult to manage. You only have to read this thread once in a while to see the different scenarios people find themselves in.

I can't imagine the country/economy can withstand much more past another 6 months. The levels of debt/unemployment caused by the last 6 months haven't even yet come to the surface so any extended duration will prove disastrous for many.

Worst case scenario? No vaccine works... I guess we would then have years of mask-wearing and hand-washing with people being asked to go back to work whilst the 'most vulnerable' groups are told to stay home?

Yep. Also, as someone who isn't older/more vulnerable I'm not worried about catching it and dying. I'm worried about catching it and passing it on to friends, family, colleagues etc who might be more vulnerable than me. Or who might go on to pass it on to others.

also people should ignore well not panic as much on case numbers in the next couple of weeks, will take time for these measures to work (if they do)

And as someone vulnerable I’m worried about passing it to others that are vulnerable .... just to complete the loop

Exactly. Plus let’s not forget we’re on this forum because of Glastonbury, owned by a guy who’s now 84. Think of the amount of crew who would be considered ‘too old’, the artists considered ‘too old’.

The only way to stop the most at risk catching the virus is to stop the virus. It would simply not be possibly to shield vulnerable people from it, if it’s in wide circulation.

To clarify, it's open to everyone in the sense that everyone is welcome to come to the virtual meet - but probably isn't much use to anyone else.

Sorry if the amount of posts from the regulars is offputting.  Not our intention - well, at least not mine.

Another new vaccine going to phase 3 trials. One shot and no freezing needed
