I have to admit, I'm pretty shocked now I've found out how lax the proposed "circuit breaker" lockdowns are proposed to be. You can't "break" a circuit if so much is still open.

I had kind of assumed they would be very hard, and posted to that effect earlier. He's right - a lockdown less severe than those we had for months isn't going to do much in two weeks.

They can be useful in bringing the numbers down over time. But if it's going to be short, surely it has to be sharp?

I'd assumed it was about buying time to get through to March.

Apparently end of October would be really bad on current trend. So doing end of September would buy time, then do it again mid December for Christmas. That brings you to about March when vaccine and mass tests are due.

Agreed it's about buying time. I'm just sceptical about how much time it would buy as proposed.

I think in March both the politicians and wider public failed to realise the impact the virus would have and now we realise a lot more could it he more likely the politicians will act quickly and the public comply more? I know it won't always be 100% compliance but if there is a target for more normality in the spring thanks to mass testing there is more of a common aim for everyone to reach for which ive found has helped reassure me e.g reaching Easter, having my birthday, starting back at work etc

A telling off from the scientists and then Boris coming in with his plans and an aim to save Christmas.

I think the good cop/bad cop method may be good, it reminds us that we're slowly heading back to normality but still need to be cautious - as part of the speech I could see him saying measures that will be brought in if cases spiral but also what may be able to happen if we obey the rules and cases fall as hoped e.g. greater chance of christmas going ahead

So there’s no circuit breaker anymore?

If they don’t do something soon, we will be where France and Spain are. And that’s not a good position to be in.

There was never a circuit breaker, they just “considered it”. Sounds like the Rishi Sunak faction of the cabinet and some Tory backbenchers talked the PM out of it.

It might still happen but there is optimism that draconian restrictions will be avoided at least for this week. If by next weekend the data is showing the rule of six hasn’t worked then we could see tighter rules next week. It really is fluid

Well no decision yet. But sounds like some in the cabinet want to see if the rule of six works

I can’t see how this rule of 6 is going to work. I’m sorry but I could see 200 people in a day at university at freshers but just go between groups of 6 at different tables and not be breaking any rules. (Obviously I’m not going to do this). A lot of students are seeing more than 6 people at a time, and I know because I have friends at university who are not sticking to the rules.

Plus, i really didn’t realise people were meeting in groups larger than 6 really before anyway, aside from the illegal raves... and they aren’t going to stop.

I think the government have to do something. They were criticised from acting too late the first time, so they can’t make the same mistake again. I hope we are still allowed to meet in groups of 6 (in my opinion for me this is more relaxed than the original 2 households rule!) but nationwide curfew on hospitality or proper enforcement of current mask rules would possible options moving forwards. (If we can finally tighten enforcement maybe introduction of masks in restaurants and pubs and shop workers wouldn’t harm). And maybe encourage people to go back to WFH who don’t have to work from the office?

I don’t want to be restricted on socialising as I think the current rules on socialising are adequate, but if cases continue to spike restrictions on hospitality are probably justified in my opinion.

The government need to sort out test and trace to be honest. We might not have been in such a bad position if it wasn’t for the mess up.

Remember that the 2 households was just guidance though, the police couldn’t prevent any gathering less than 30. Now anything above 6 can be split up and fined. So although it might seem more relaxed, it’s a lot more enforceable.

Do you reckon they might try and restrict travel, like advising people to stop holidaying in this country and making unnecessary journeys? Strongly suggesting you should only travel for work (if you can’t from home) and urgent issues etc?

I really think they should - for half term especially. I'm also amazed those in areas around Liverpool and Manchester are allowed to leave those areas for any reasons other than work really. Keep it contained. It clearly worked in Wuhan - obviously not saying be as strict as that but the principle is just common sense - if you have clear outbreak areas then isolate them from everywhere else as best you can, especially for non essential journeys.

Interesting that Whitty and Valance are doing their thing in Monday, and Johnson on Tuesday....separating the politics from the science.

Yeah this is weird. I wonder if Whitty and Vallance will have press questions.

Splitting it out like this makes me think maybe no major restrictions this week but I don't know why. Maybe because Boris would rely heavily on the scientists to support what he was saying usually.
