It's a weird one - I think the only other option was that we stay in full lockdown the whole year.

There should've just been honesty about what was coming in winter - any logical person knew this was coming eventually, that there would be full winter restrictions on socialising and maybe full lockdowns til April/May, its just come a few weeks earlier than we thought.

I think that's unfair. No-one really knew what was going to happen - cases would go up, but we couldn't predict by how much. I think it was equally likely we'd open up and see much reduced transmission because of stuff not accounted for.

The way I understood it, the availability of tests is there, but the turnaround time is really slow from a backlog in processing the tests in the labs. Which means they then make less tests available to the public while they try to clear the backlog.

There needs to be an easy opt-out in place. If you're potentially waiting 5+ days for a test result, you could feel better by then. They need to keep testing then filter out tests that don't need reviewing if people go "oh yeah it's just a cold and now I'm fine".

The US Supreme Court stuff is fucked. If Trump is able to nominate someone it locks up the court for the ultra-conservatives for a generation. There's a chance if Biden gets in he could extend the court to 11 judges instead.

But what really worries me is the chance of a close election, Trump legally contesting it (while refusing to vacate office) and a 4-4 deadlocked tie in the court. I'm not sure there's even a process for dealing with that.

(For those wondering what this all means, there's a decent chance that with an ultra-conservative majority, someone could bring a case to overturn Roe vs Wade, that guarantees a woman's right to an abortion, and it could go through, leading to abortion being outlawed in some US states).

In London today to see my aunt. When I came at end of July just after masks were introduced, compliance was 95-100%.

Its dropped massively. I’d say maximum 40%, if that. So many people not wearing masks on the bus, barely anyone in shops and absolutely no one in takeaways. Went to a fish and chip restaurant for lunch too and no one wearing masks not even the staff.

Today has definitely been a shock for me compared to last week in germany and I can see why the numbers are getting out of control again. The government have really lost control over this virus and because of the terrible inconsistent messaging the public have given up caring and are not abiding by the rules anymore, and not even the police are enforcing masks. When in germany last week mask enforcement was super strict, here it’s non existent...

I think they'll change the rules this week and have a tougher crackdown on it e.g. no mask, no entry and introduce them into restaurants (even if I do think it's an pointless exercise when you're exempt sitting down), I do think the government are genuinely going to make some effort to prevent cases worsening but as you say public compliance is also needed so they need to change their approach slightly

There must be differences in mindset in different areas. Where I live and work, Canterbury and Thanet, mask wearing in shops and on transport is still easily > 90%

I guess it’s that herd mentality, if everyone else is most people will. If others aren’t, people think why should I bother?

Yep just that ... that’s exactly what happened with colleagues at work and slowly customers take that same attitude following the staff example

I guess for a lot of people it hasn't affected them...they don't have anyone close who has had it, let alone died of it. And...with social media, and pub chat...there's all this it's all bollocks thing going on...and even worse that it's a conspiracy etc etc. And people are just sick of it, they want their old lives back...but it now looks like that isn't going to happen any time soon, infact quite possibly going to get worse. It's going to be a long and grim winter.

I think they should do that on a locality basis to be honest. Why should SW and other places do that when they still don't have many cases?

I guess to prevent the case numbers going up. Cornwall and Devon are still full of tourists so there's definitely plenty of cases down here. I think we will have an announcement Monday or Tuesday.
