If we don't know that the CMO has advised a new lockdown, but actually an (unnamed so far) newspaper says that independent sage says that the CMO might have advised a lockdown, then that's a welcome clarification.

I get that it was the way he worded it to imply I just post any fake news nonsense that I don’t look into which wound me up; when I feel I try to offer information people might find interesting and helpful.

One thing I've realised as I've got older is that I'm now far more accepting of the fact that people as a collective species are idiots. Whether it's simplistic populist sloganeering winning elections, or an apparent inability to maintain multiple behavioural patterns as required, I have a shrinking faith in the belief that we're all just not component cells of a giant moron. I have to look at individuals and small groups to have any hope for us!

Mrs C and I had exactly the same thoughts and discussion last night. Maybe it’s just a natural part of the ageing process. It seems to me in this reality tv generation many people are attracted by soundbites and empty rhetoric than cold hard facts and proper debate.  Our leaders and their spin doctors seem to have realised that. Though I will say attending Glastonbury is one thing that does restore my faith in human nature and that we actually can socialise, enjoy ourselves and be tolerant of others lifestyles.

I'd just take each post as it comes and accept that this time the intervention wasn't needlessly pedantic, it was useful.  We're not here to share any old titbit, we want to share useful and accurate information, otherwise we might as well be on Twitter.

Oz don’t fret it ... posts are fine ... sometimes posts get questioned on the net ... people can’t read minds and they want to be sure ... and we discuss ...

Mrs Q suggested I was becoming grumpier about people the other day (can't remember what we were talking about). My response was that in a modern world where we (quite rightly I think) try to look past the immediate and see if if there are underlying drivers for people's behaviour, we can often lose sight of the fact that for some people, the underlying causes and drivers are quite simply that those people are arseholes.

It's important that we still give people the opportunity to simply be arseholes just because they are.

That is interesting, as it's definitely at odds with what I see!  But I guess there's a lot more to it than just mask/no mask so it's hardly a controlled experiment!

Thinking about people in general, maybe it's more likely to be attention span!  The wearing of masks is relatively new, whereas they've been telling us to maintain distance and wash our hands for 6 months now, so people just forget they've still got to do it.

One thing I've realised as I've got older is that I'm now far more accepting of the fact that people as a collective species are idiots. Yeah, I guess it just takes a bit of getting used to. At this stage, popping a mask on whenever I go indoors is just second nature, but I have easy access to lots of them, so it required very little effort on my part. I also know what we are up against and when people who generally view this whole thing as a massive inconvenience are constantly being told they make no difference, it's a battle to get the message across (not helped by the mixed messaging at the start!). I've been living in a little bubble for most of the last six months and everywhere around me is pretty much 100% compliance on masks, but I have had to go into work and out to the hospital a couple of times, as well as to other parts of the city and notice a big difference (these happen to be the parts of Dublin where case numbers are going through the roof...but it's not all just down to the masks).

Working in some kind of customer service/hospitality job for most of my adult life makes even that bit tricky

Just goes to show what one tweet from a well respected person can do. I worry how many people’s mental health was pushed to the brink by the media jumping on that bogus story.

Fair play on that one, I think you could’ve worded your first post a bit better as I was only trying to pass on info I thought was interesting/relevant.

I blame the media for jumping on rumour, gossip and memery rather than anyone for posting media stories on here, and I genuinely do apologise if I worded my post in a way that came across as being harsh towards you which wasn’t my intention, but I just wanted to point out that Costello tweeted that he’s “hearing” Whitty wants a two week lockdown isn’t really a reliable source and we shouldn’t be jumping to the assumption that Whitty is lobbying for that as sections of the media had done. Please do continue posting tidbits on here, but it’s important that we don’t believe everything as gospel especially when any second lockdown will have such devastating effects on mental health up and down the country.

Just to play devils advocate here, would a two-week lockdown really be so awful for people to cope with? Essentially what anyone with symptoms is supposed to do anyway so if the prospect is that bad then we are screwed hoping people will follow that advice.

I accept a two week lockdown would be awful for the economy.
