In my opinion:

Starmer seems to have a real plan for getting the Tories out. Everything he does is very calm and calculated and, as much as I liked Corbyn, he hasn't yet fallen in to their traps the same way Jez did repeatedly.

He's got a great track record as a human rights lawyer and QC and feels to me like the guy who can do the most to unify the party (at least as much as possible). He's very different from Corbyn. He doesn't show the same passion and lacks the cult of personality vibe, but on the flip side he's much less divisive, articulate and sensible. Basically he's the type of leader *I* think we need at this time - someone who can appeal to many different people at once. He just seems like a top bloke as well.

My friends dad knows him really well from his time at the Bar (the lawyer kind), says he’s an absolute gentleman and doesn’t have a bad word to say about him

It will be interesting to see what his policies are when the time comes.  It just feels like we go from one party to the other and back again over the years and different bits and pieces get done but is there ever any real change?  JC did feel "different", he didn't feel like part of the establishment and is the only person I've felt was a real threat to the status quo, hence why the media were so keen to destroy him.  I hope we are not back to more of the same with Starmer, but I am totally open when it comes to voting and am ready to be swayed as we clearly need some sort of change.  I just wish we had something other than a 2 party system which I am totally turned off by.

I used to feel like this.  Like the only difference between the party in power was the colour of the tie on the leader.  Like there wasn't any real differences and nothing ever changed.

Then Cameron won outright in 2015.  Then we had years of Brexit, division and acrimony.  I'll state the obvious and say that it'll be a while before all that calms down.

I'd happily go back to how things were 10 years ago, I reckon.  If you're holding out for anything more than a slightly left-of-centre administration, this isn't that country.

Things do change.  Sadly it's rarely in the way I'd like them to, but they do change.

I don't know much about Starmer.  Is there something he has done in his past that gives you so much confidence in him? I've lost faith in most/all politicians.  Corbyn was the only one that seemed to me to really be cut from a different cloth, but that ship has sailed.

I echo the points said by @jparx. I also think from his leadership campaign he had some decent policy ideas, he considers himself a socialist and those policies echo that. To name a few:

- Would scrap the House of Lords

- He supports a more PR Voting system

- Reverse cuts to Corp Tax

- Nationalisation of the railways

- Supports Labours Green New Deal

- Replace Universal Credit

Anyone seriously trying to tackle these two points alone would get my vote.

I think a PR voting system is so vital, as there are more important issues but without different types of governments they won’t get the focus.

Cineworld cinemas reopening July 10th

Work at cineworld. Not too exciting at this news. No new films till 27th July. Less seats, screenings each day. Prices probs rise. Impossible for staff to socially distance. City cinemas may get the business but can't see everyone rushing out to pay 16 quid to see a re release of inception. Think they'll be massive layoffs/ film delays. But hope I'm wrong

The problem with the PR vote is that it’s only wanted by the party not in power. Those with the majority want to keep the status quo.

That's the thing, it's easy for Starmer to have these views when he isn't in government but would he change his mind if he won with a majority?

Ah ok. Im hoping they play some more of the independent films. Days of bagnold summer for example. I think Tenent will still come out: Nolan is insistent on it coming out early to help cinemas

The official twitter and my work has hinted heavily (not confirmed) that it is gonna be films re released, MCU films was mentioned. No new films until Mulan on 27th. In fact I'll be surprised if we see as many indie films at all. Most studios know now that indie films could do better on home release, The Hunt, Invisible Man, King of Staten Island, being recent examples of smaller films that have had hug success at home, after being cut short or cancelled at the cinema. - Yeah I hopeful Tenet will come out, but if the cinemas open and the box office is dreadful for the inception re release i can see them delaying again, leaving cineworld with no films for ages

The Opposition were due to debate this later today weren't they? Feel like the govt have announced this u-turn before Labour could put real pressure on them so it's Marcus' victory, not Labour's...

Or is that too pessimistic?

Edit: just to say it's great news either way!

Yep, same as it ever was with Spaffer......

Lord Heseltine has told Good Morning Britain that Boris Johnson is a politician who “waits to see the way the crowd is running and then dashes in front”.

He said: “Well, I think that you have to see Boris as a career map. He works it out, he decides which way the wind is blowing, and that wonderful phrase about a politician - a man who waits to see the way the crowd is running and then dashes in front and says, ‘Follow me’.”

Interesting new drug to cut covid deaths

Surely the biggest news yet?

A vaccine is seen as the holy grail but a widely available, cheap, safe therapeutic like this that can make an obvious difference to those worst affected could be key to the short term curtailment of this virus helping to save lives until other more effective options are developed.

Great news it can easily be access globally even in the poorest nations as well.

Aye. Well hopefully all these u-turns come back to bite him. Constant u-turns is hardly a good trait for a leader, especially one who just last week was hammering Starmer for a supposed u-turn. Although obviously in these cases it's ultimately a good thing he's made the decision.

It’s great news all in all. Hopefully Starmer can present it in a damaging way against the PM.

Completely understandable circumstances and it was clearly allowed by the government there, as well as that they mention they only ever used private transport excluding the plane. They also don't seem to know where the said people are citizens of nor where they may have picked it up so I'd side this more on the sensationalist side as you've said.

The two women are both New Zealanders. My wife's a kiwi and her best friend knows the younger of them from school (this is pretty much peak New Zealand). The best friend messaged my wife earlier saying they are currently being vilified, which is a tad harsh as they flew all the way back to see their dying mum. Jacinda Ardern's been online saying they didn't break the rules, though, so hopefully that will help.
