When will this shit end?

I'm in a very confused state presently. In early Feb I took voluntary redundancy . Then came covid and whilst working out a 12 week notice period I was sent home on the 1st of April on furlough. Whilst on furlough I received an email from my still employer telling me that they wanted to extend my furlough until the end of June and then my redundency would be paid within two weeks of July, but in the email they also stated that if the furlough was extended further they could also extend mine. As they put me on furlough instead of just sending me to another office to work off my remaining notice period it appears to me that they may have made a legal error thus now being part of the companies furloughed employees and they can't change it for fear of the goverment fining them. I am completely void knowledge on the law on this and thus after today's announcement I feel weirdly in limbo

I think if it makes you feel more secure then do it by all means.  Coughing/sneezing etc within close range of each other is the main method of transmission though so I'm not sure how effective some of these measures are, but I guess it can't hurt.

It's all about the surfaces too as that's why they say wash your hands after touching anything and don't touch your face - I'm taking no chances tbh

Hello! You might want to consider getting in touch with Working Families. They're a charity that gives our free employment law advice to people in situations like these (I'm a lawyer and have worked with them in the past, though admittedly I'm not specialised in employment law).

That being said though, being put on furlough is a voluntarily process. Your employer can't force you to go on furlough, just as you coudln't force your employer to put you on furlough. They need your consent, so if you'd rather not be on furlough and take the redundancy then I don't see how your employer could argue against that. As your employer isn't picking up the bill for your salary while you're on furlough, it just sounds like they've put you on the scheme to guarantee your income while everything is still uncertain and until you take your redundancy (this being the altruistic interpretation - it could just as easily be an admin error on their part haha!).

Hope this helps anyway :)

I've had to put myself on furlough so I've read all the rules and think I understand them.

I'm pretty sure that your employer has done nothing wrong. They are allowed to furlough someone who's employment was coming to an end, and to effectively re-employ them (with the employee's agreement of course).

And they can put you on or off furlough as they wish, with the only requirement being that any furlough period is at least 3 weeks.

You can read the govts guidance here

Possibly, Bearded Theory still on for Sept so far - they have said they will review/advise July/Aug time but I'd be surprised if it goes ahead tbh

Bearded theory and Shambala are still currently happening. I’m holding out hope

I was due at Sonar for a stag the weekend before Glastonbury and that was (obviously) cancelled a couple of days ago. At the time I’d booked the whole lot of work from Thursday through to the week after G, with basically the Tuesday inbetween as a rest day and the one day to sort all my Glasto stuff out. I seriously worried about how my body would cope with pretty much 10 days of continuous punishment. Funny how my worries are completely different now!

I was the same! Due to be at glasto mon-mon, Ibiza for a stag thurs-mon then on to noisily for my 40th on the thurs-sun.

An exciting run but secretly worried if I should be doing that / could handle doing that at my age!!

And now I’ll never know!

Literally had to beg to get the best part of a month booked off work too

I do sometimes think people forget how hard lockdown is on the young. Obviously we have to do it for now to protect people, but I think it's fine to say how lockdown is tough and that trying to find a way out doesn't mean you want people to die.

I have to admit, in my early forties and having worked from home for the best part of the last decade, it's nowhere near the massive change in lifestyle it would have been 15 years ago (or even worse 25 years ago).

As a teenager, I was out with my mates almost every night at one point.

I’m 38 so had the same concerns! Was genuinely worried about the stag interfering a bit with Glasto, and visa versa. Nice worries to have though.

Funnily enough I had an Ibiza stag the following week after Glastonbury last year, it certainly took its toll.

Despite my best efforts - I locked myself down more than I week before the official date, I picked up the virus around 12 days ago. It’s more likely to have been from a contaminated surface I think. Maybe at Boots picking up a prescription. Never been closer than 3-4 metres from anyone. I’ve had a dreadful 7 days and only starting to tell people about it now, when I think I’m getting better. Worst was two days veering from puddles of sweat to violent shivering.

I’ll share a little moment, maybe it will resonate with someone, maybe it’s just embarrassing: in the middle of one night last week I accepted that if I was to die I was ok with that and I wasn’t afraid anymore. It was the most spiritually uplifting moment of my life.

Sorry to hear that. Glad you're doing better
