In Peru they restricted the sale of alcohol as its a nonessential item, seems to make sense to me.

Although of course you could still get it if you tried, but that was the official line.

I wouldn’t agree with this at all. I mean don’t get me wrong, I get the logic but I think that would be taking things too far. Confine us to our homes, sure we all accept and agree that’s necessary. But to deny us simple pleasures within our home is a bit much. Ok, I’m lucky to have a garden, but having a drink out in the sun this week has been nothing short or spectacular in the context of life at the moment.

Yeah Worthing does tend to have a lot of older people. My sisters work in the hospital in the children's wards but what I've gathered it has been coping so far.

Cool.  I hope your sisters and their patients manage to stay safe.

Yeah shopping is clearly the most dangerous thing most of us - except the key workers obvs - will do in a day.

Each time I go shopping I feel more anxious doing so. Full respect to people working in shops all day, unsung heroes for sure.

So the transmission in the community has been decreasing ever since the lockdown was implemented. So each day you go shopping from now on it's actually less likely you'll encounter someone transmitting the disease unknowingly. Not sure if that helps!

The problem I find when in a supermarket is that folk are still browsing and spending ages making their selections.  They really should be in with a prepared list.  Well done those who are having to work in shops and supermarkets

In theory I agree. But I went on Saturday and was shopping for 9 different ppl. Shopping for other people is surprisingly time consuming as everyone has slight variations on what they want and need.

I’m a quick shopper when just for myself but I was in the shop for hours doing other people’s and I bet I looked like I was on a day out browsing the goods.

Is that right? Even though the number of of infected people has gone up? I'm not convinced - the number of new cases may have flattened (not decreased yet), but the total number of cases has gone up. Surely the infection rate has gone down because we're all staying away from the dangerous places more often, not because they're less dangerous yet.

So on a given day, we might be less likely to catch it, but that's because of our actions, not because the danger levels have receded. That's right isn't it?

My brain is hurting now.

Everything’s lagged though isn’t it. Cases turning up at hospitals now potentially got infected up to two weeks ago. There has to be less infected people about now than there was at any point before in  the last few weeks, but we won’t see that in the numbers yet.

Fewer infections is not the same thing as fewer infected people.

Yeah, I’ve reasoned myself into that position. And guess it is logical, thanks. Maybe it’s the increased measures each time go out (new screens in shops, more masks, etc) ramp up the anxiety.

If anything those new measures would help my anxiety.

Do they give the transmission breakdown in the UK figures? In Ireland they do and we’re still up around 60% of cases resulting from community transmission (for those that they can figure out, there remains a chunk of unknowns). When community transmission gets close to 0%, that’s when they start to think about lifting restrictions. In theory, anywhere you are in close contact with others puts you at greatest risk, so previously that would have been public transport, work, socialising etc. Now Supermarkets are the main place people are spending any appreciable time (apart from those still at work, and they are at greatest risk and really putting themselves out there for the rest of us...least we can do is support them and stay at home!). Controlling how many are in the shop, practising good hand hygiene and not touching your face etc should get you through a regular shop without too much to worry about. In reality, without knowing the case density in your area, you could be at no risk or some risk! They won’t release that level of info though, as everyone in areas with no cases will start to ignore the advice. Personally, I’ve been using click and collect for the last few weeks. Wipe everything down with a 70% isopropanol wipe before I put it away, then a good scrub of the hands. If I have to go into somewhere, I do the above and my clothes go straight in the wash.  I’ve been in close contact with confirmed cases twice (took 9 days for me to be informed about one of them!), but was already on restricted movement by choice, so it didn’t make any difference.

East Wittering, just South of Chichester. Efests wouldn’t let me upload high quality pic (prob due to panorama) but Selsey Manhood Peninsular is the the far distance looking East & Isle of Wight is South West & Portsmouth West of where I was sat.

Popular place for holiday/second homes & retired folk, sailing & water-sports enthusiasts and motorsport. Ronnie Wood, Damon Hill & Branson’s mom live down the road.

edit: I have to say it’s lovely during the summer but winter, it’s horrible, especially when we had those storms a couple of months ago.

Ahhh very nice. Its a lovely coast line

I lived in Worthing for 5 years. Mrs Chuckles comes from there so it is a part of the world i know quite well. Miss the sea living in the north west, but there are other benefits of being close to a city with tons going on. Take the best from where ever you are!

I'd say that we haven't even fully seen even the tip of the iceberg on this. The last I heard there was no evidence to say that once you caught it you are then immune (assuming you make it through). So, unless a vaccine is found, I'd say that this 'shit' is easily going to roll on in to next year. I'll be happy to be wrong on that perspective though.

I think you've heard wrong luckily. There's plenty of evidence that once you've caught it you're immune. It's increasingly looking likely that this immunity will be relatively long lived.

I still think it could be quite a long time before we're back to cramming into stuffy rooms to watch sweaty bands play.

Edit: not sure how I managed to reply to such an old comment. Sorry Yog, you've probably heard about the immunity stuff by now :)

Hello stuartbert two hats,

Yeah, I think what I said was accurate at the time, but now hopefully not so. I still think that this could go on for much longer than people expect / hope for. Obviously if a vaccine is found sooner rather than later then that'll be a game changer.

I haven't looked in to it, but apparently the virus started in bats, then went to pangolins, and then humans. Makes me wonder why our livestock and domestic animals might not be susceptible too.
