Non-Glasto highlights:

- Gallows, in a tent, Sonisphere 2010

Big 4 of Thrash, (Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica) consecutively, Sonisphere 2011

Public Service Broadcasting, The Cluny, Newcastle, 2013

The Prodigy, O2 Academy, Newcastle, 2015 (the most non-stop energetic, all-round mental gig I have ever had the privilege of attending)

The Streets, Brixton Academy, 2018

Glasto highlights:

Hot Chip, West Holts, 2015

- Patti Smith into Lionel Richie, Pyramid, 2015

Chic, Sampha, Kano, Justice, Sunday 2017 (a stage hopping run of 4 near perfect sets)

Stormzy, Pyramid, 2019 (I felt like I was watching in an important cultural moment happen in a way I've never quite experienced before)

- The Cure, Pyramid, 2019 (on a sonic level, probably the most impressive concert I've been at)

It's funny how people react to different bands.  I've only walked out of two gigs ever and one of those was Public Service Broadcasting at Wychwood a couple of years ago.  They all seemed up their own backsides.  But each to their own.

Ha ha. I saw Public Service Broadcasting at Truck last year - absolutely baffled at the reputation they've earned, every song was exactly the same and I found it all quite dull.

The only PSB that counts has Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe in it.

Public Service Broadcasting are a sensational band!

I’ve seen them 5 times, from tiny clubs around the time the first album was released through to large outdoor events, and every time they’ve won the audience over. I can see they can be an acquired taste, and hope they continue to expand on their sound otherwise there’s a danger it can get a bit repetitive. I’d like to see them given a decent slot on one of the larger Glasto stages - think the last time they played was at the Glade?

But yeah, each to his own...

What was the other gig you walked out of?

Mick Taylor (sometime Rolling Stone).  Did a gig fronting his own band in Newport and so into himself he didn't seem to recognise there was an audience.

Only two walkouts in over 50 years of gig and festival-going.  I accept that both acts are generally well regarded so maybe they were having off nights, or perhaps it was me.

I had one other walk-away, which was from Metallica at Glastonbury.  They were good but not to my taste.  Walked off and stumbled across Bryan Ferry doing a superb set somewhere else on the festival site.

And equally quite something people can have different reactions because I was at that same slot at Truck Festival and thought they were superb, even if they didn't play Sputnik and I had to run early to get a good spot for Wolf Alice.
