Best Gigs of the Decade

With all the threads offering 'best of's from the decade just finished (the teens?) I have felt a little left out. Even coming up with a top 10 albums has been a struggle and in truth I'd find it easier to get 10 great albums from individual years for the 60s thru 90s, let alone the decade. That's not to say that I haven't enjoyed new music this last ten years, but for me, there's just not been enough of it.

However, I have been to some amazing gigs over the last decade, some of the best of my life (and I guess the artists here indicate where my taste lies). Here are the highlights. More than 5, less than 10... in chronological order:

  • Rage Against the Machine, Finsbury Park 2010
  • Bruce Springsteen & ESB, Rome 2013
  • Prince, Birmingham 2014
  • Pearl Jam, Milton Keynes 2014
  • Coldplay, Glastonbury 2016
  • U2, Twickenham 2017
  • Steven Wilson, Royal Albert Hall 2018
  • Tool, Download 2019

But there were so many others that were fantastic. My setlist.fm  page carries the full history.

So what were the best gigs you experienced in the last decade, including festival sets?

Off the top of my head and not in order:

  • The National - Hammersmith Apollo, 2017, Brighton Center 2019
  • Adele - Glastonbury, 2016
  • The Killers - Glastonbury, 2019 (that's right, come at me!)
  • Arcade Fire - Castlefield Bowl, 2017
  • Rolling Stones - Glastonbury 2013, London Stadium 2018
  • Stone Roses - Finsbury Park 2013
  • Pulp - Hyde Park 2011

There is almost certainly stuff, especially small stuff from earlier in the decade, I've forgotten.

Portishead, Glastonbury, 2013

I wonder if I actually preferred their Latitude set in 2015 because it was longer and I was on the front row, hugged Beth etc, but 2013 was just too good.

Shout out for RATM at FP in 2010, Radiohead Manchester 2017, and Kate Bush 2014.

  • Jarvis Cocker - Moth Club 27/03/18
  • Ezra Furman - The Lexington 06/02/18
  • Metallica - Glastonbury 2014 (Next to sound desk, lots of room to dance about, sharing unknown drinks with strangers!)

Yes I followed that show on twitter on the night. Few other lads from Dublin were at it. Good grief what an experience. Ive seen him a few more than you but none of the shows ive seen match Rome '13 for melodrama.

What a night....poured with rain all day and stopped within minutes of the Boss hitting the stage....great great gig.

Incredible scenes.   We were all absolutely soaked from queuing for most of the day and then this clear, blue sky suddenly appeared following Bruce's arrival. It was like magic and really set the tone for an incredible show.

The 4 song run from Kitty's Back to NYC Serenade stand as the greatest 50 minutes of music I have ever witnessed.

NYC Serenade is my all time favourite Bruce song and to hear it live is the ultimate dream. I've watched the footage from that Rome gig countless times.
