…where up-and-coming, maybe exclusively UK acts, who are yet to headline a major festival are given the Friday night Pyramid slot? Thoughts?

Could be a good idea. Better than being like Download and just recycling the same acts constantly. Plus it can be a good thing as the act may appreciate the opportunity given to then and want to do something special, rather than seeing it as "just another show".

 

All Points East kinda did the same by picking Christine and the Queens to headline. A fair few people said she's not big enough, but she put on an incredible show. It's a shame it sold so poorly and they had to give away cheap/free tickets though...

It's probably good if it is the start of a trend considering the amount of acts that have been around for years that fall into the too big to sub, too small to headline category. Might help avoid additions to that pool.

I think the idea of targeting up and comers is a good one and definitely seemed to work last year. That said you want to know they're not just booking any old shite to fill the "fresh" criteria. I imagine its tough to hit that balance.

I’m hoping that it means headliners are kept exciting and there is less of a glass ceiling for new acts to pass to achieve headline status.

Billie Eilish is headlining festivals across the world off the back of one album. I think with the way the music market is going, an artist can achieve more with one album. Stormzy is similar in the fact that he became a household name very quickly and had a good live reputation.

Its also great as it reduces the chances of circuit headliners and uninspired bookings.

I can think of no better way for the festival to show it's prepared to take a chance on exciting up and coming acts than by booking Ned Sheeran.

Dua Lipa is teasing new stuff to come on Instagram currently, if her next album is as big as the first I was just thinking she’d be a good one to call up as an up and coming potential headliner? Also she was at last years as a guest! Am I onto something?

This.  Themed slots are practical lower down the bill, but the headliners?  Whoever they can get/get away with booking.
