9 weeks ‘til my 2nd ever half marathon, not really got into the training properly yet. I’ve started a couple of times to find a few ‘niggles’ left over from my previous injury. Invested in brand new shoes now though which should help.

9 weeks is still a fair bit of time to keep up with your training, although it might depend how motivated you feel over Christmas!

I have an actual half marathon on Sunday with other runners!

I've got a bit of a niggle in my left leg so I'm going to have to take it easy but I'm still looking forward the energy of an actual event

Where are you doing that and what are the numbers/is the set-up? Didn't know this kind of thing was allowed!

It was at Dorney Lake in Windsor, they are putting it on each week through the winter for 5k, 10k and half mara distances. It was a bit of a weird set up with people having their own starting window times and then kind of just doing their own thing but it still had a nice little buzz about the place and lovely marshals cheering you on :)

It's a good flat course, I'm not in my best shape but would like to return as it definitely has PB potential.

Any of you lot do bouldering or climbing? Really interested in bouldering but I’d need some kind of lesson and not sure what the situation is at the moment.

Hello 🙂 Potentially not the best time to be giving this advice, depending on what tier your in (our climbing walls are closing again on Christmas Eve for three weeks) but...

The great thing about bouldering is that you probably don't need any lessons to start you off 🙂 most walls will have a range of colour-coded climbs, with the easiest ones essentially being like ladders. At the really good walls, the difference in difficulty to the next grade won't be too big, making it easier to progress. Normally on the first visit you can register to become a member, and they'll make you watch a safety video and sign a form saying you understand the risks. You can hire shoes and buy chalk there (although you won't really need chalk at the easiest levels). its worth enquiring at your local wall to see if they do any free lessons. Some walls do group classes for beginners (and intermediate level) at the same time every week. It's free to join as long as you've paid for entry. For me, I find it better to go with someone to help me work out problems (because I'm not very good, ha!) but climbing folk are a friendly bunch and often if people see you trying something you can't do, they might give you tips. Or just watch what other people are doing. Bouldering is obviously way easier to get into by yourself, as with rope climbing you need a buddy (or can use auto belays, which are terrifying). I would also say that with rope climbing you need some lessons first - its a lot more dangerous for a start if you mess it up!

The one additional thing I'll say is that most people progress very quickly at first, and then plateau. Don't give up when you hit that... by then you will hopefully have formed a little climbing crew and be able to go with them and work out all the problems together. Have fun!

Brilliant - was just about coming to terms with the fact that going to the gym was going to be my big 'treat' for the next couple of weeks!

Yup, same. And how to burn off the Christmas calories when they're closed from Boxing Day 😕

Right, here we go guys....time to get serious!

I'm doing Dry Veganuary. Which could well be horrific, but given that pubs and restaurants are likely to be shut for the whole month, it seems the best time to try. I'm also fairly convinced that the healthier diet will help me lose weight whilst not being hungover means I won't talk myself off exercise.

I've found an online fitness programme with 35-40 in workouts, five times a week. My plan is to do that every morning before work, switching the really jumpy sessions for a run if I can't go out in the garden. I'm also then going to continue the zoom exercise sessions with my mates in the afternoon. Also adding in some yoga to stretch everything out.

Let's see how im doing by the end of January 😄

Fairplay to you - I do dry Jan every year, but I reckon I'll struggle this time! Could do with it as have shifted a stone in four weeks before - but I usually fill my Say nights by going to the theatre or the cinema! Also think I owe it to my mate I'm in a support bubble with to carry on popping around his for drinks as he lives alone (I'm all heart).

Nice soft drinks could be an option: https://www.squarerootsoda.com/collections/cases-of-soda/products/the-one-of-everything-case

I’m teetotal but have enjoyed the ones I’ve tried of these.

Aye, not gonna lie - I'm assuming being a vegan will be crap loads easier than not drinking!

As I was super hungover, my first Veganuary dinner was a dominoes vegan pizza. Fortunately it was vile, so I won't be tempted to do that again 😄

@Ryan1984 not a bad shout! Also maybe time to buy that ridiculously expensive ponegranat juice they have in the zero waste store...

I think we now have a vegan / vegetarian chilled  end of an aisle in asda .... might be worth looking at if you are passing one ... might give you a bit of variety

We're lucky here as we have some specialist vegan restaurants and takeaways:

Although I'm not vegan, and not strictly vegetarian I eat very little meat. Some good recipes on here:

Recommendation for vegan pizza - check out White Rabbit.  They're the first one Mrs Q has found where the cheese, and I quote, doesn't taste of fucking feet. Available in Sainsburys and Waitrose, not usually in Tesco. Other supermarkets are available.

Not done any cardio since Xmas Day which is a bit crap. WIll have to get out on the bike again soon. Just been doing sofa weights every other day but feel a bit like I'm treading water. Should go jogging but knee started clicking on furlough due to excessive jogging. Weather was a lot more enticing then too!

Yeh, it's been waaaay to icy to even think about running here...Glasgow was like an ice rink yesterday - even walking was a struggle! I did see one woman doing laps of a tiny patch of grass though - that's commitment!

Twice this week I've been outside in 0 degrees doing the cardio bit of my exercise class in the very frosty communal garden. Only for 15-20 mins at a time, but my neighbours probably think I'm mental anyway.

Ugh. First weights session in the garage last night since before Christmas.  Had planned to restart between Christmas & New Year but covid put a bit of a damper on that.  Can't tell if it was hard work because I've been a lazy bastard or if I've got a bit of the fatigue thing going on. Find out tonight with round 2 I guess.

Looking forward to being able to go outside again tomorrow when my 10 days is up, got some new running gear that I want to try out!  Have no idea if I'm actually going to be able to run for more than a couple of minutes yet mind 😬

Long slow run today to push distance and recover, I set a new personal best 5km time of 20:41 over the weekend which felt great because I only started consistently running 10 months ago and couldn't even run 4km 25 minutes.

That 20 min marker's coming up fast pal, great work!

That's some going, I was happy to get down to 23:30 for 5km over Christmas.

Weight has crept up a few pounds over the festive period but I kept quite active so don't think my fitness has dropped much.  The gym being shut now isn't going to help so it's outside training for me during my lunch hour.  First proper session today seeing as I forgot my trainers yesterday, doh!

I managed to get a lot of runs in over Christmas and was loving being able to get out whilst it was light which isn't possible during the week during winter so I'm hoping there was some damage limitation to the amount of food and booze consumed.

I'm hoping it doesn't get too icy to run here as it is honestly one of the only things that keeps me sane! I had a trail half mara booked in for the 23rd Jan in the New Forest, which has now been postponed... here we go again!

I'm starting to think I'm a bit of an obsessive with running which is somewhat healthy but also not as I regularly have to work on my muscles to make sure I'm not injuring myself! Back on furlough here so I'm trying to give myself a purpose.
