As for this weekend I had a surprise 30th to attend for a good mate, had every intention of not drinking and no naughties.

That obviously never happened, was wiped out Saturday all day, but managed to pick myself up for a struggler 21km on Sunday - just looked at next weeks long run and its 17 miles... (just over 27k!) definitely need a mega healthy fuelling week to prepare!

21k is a great effort under those circumstances. This really does illustrate just why signing up for these stupid challenges is a great idea!

I'm almost done with a month without booze; fall off the wagon Saturday...

After a chest infection throughout December destroyed my training attempts, I broke the 10 mile mark for the first time in my weekend training run yesterday.  Starting to get the hang of fuelling as well, and someone telling me to try podcasts has been a game changer.   My ankle has stopped swelling after every run now as well, which is brilliant.  I could have gone longer, but I'm sticking to the small increases on my long runs.  On target to be able to do my 20 mile one 3 weeks before the actual event.

Given how when I did my first "long" run at the start January I gave up and just mentally didn't think I could do it, it's been a massive turn around, and I'm actually feeling really positive about it all.

Cheers, and it certainly is.  When I broke my ankle I really did think it was game over, so I'm delighted to be where I am.  I'm not going to set any time records, but as long as I finish it, it will be my personal best! 😀 It's good to read this thread to get a bit of encouragement from what others are  up to as well.

I've let myself go massively in the last couple of months due to impending fatherhood, becoming a father and now suffering with a cold (which is great considering to day is my first day back at work following 3 weeks paternity leave!)

As soon as this illness has done one i'll be full throttle on the fitness train.

Intending on doing my gym sessions / runs before I start work in the morning's so around 6.30am which is a new one for me as i've always gone after work previously.

Does anyone else train early? Any tips?

Hey JoeyT,

What @Quark said about putting all your stuff out ready is spot on!

I think it's really important to form good habits and get a routine going, especially with working out early as it's always tempting to stay in bed instead. Consistent bed times and alarm times are really important and it will all soon become routine - you just got to push through the first few weeks and drag yourself out of bed!

The weekend efforts sound brilliant, glad people aren't giving up post- January!

I did a ten miler Sunday, I took it nice and slow and it felt great to enjoy running again. Then became super unwell Sunday afternoon and have been out of action bed bound until now :(

I'm going to try and get to my boxing class tonight as mentally as well as physically I like to try and exercise each day. I also can't do as much mileage as I'd like over the next couple of weeks as I have an impending exam! So I'm just going to try and keep fitness levels up for now.

Also need to try and limit efestivals distraction time... this is going to be a bit harder!

Got myself a physio appointment booked for tonight, was expecting a bit more of a wait so I'm happy with that.  The place I'm going is only 10 minutes from my house, and the physio I'm seeing is a shoulder specialist for NHS, BUPA and Nuffield so fingers crossed he'll be able to put me back on the right path!

Yeah, it's not going to be a massage job.  My hope is that he'll be able to identify exactly where the impingement is and whether there's actually any muscle tears that need to repair, and give me the proper rehab programme to fix it.

Advantage I've got is that when it comes to stuff like that I'm REALLY good at following the instructions from the physios and doing exactly what I'm told :) One of the reasons I always managed to come back from injuries pretty quickly when I was playing!

Can recommend the Rat Race in May. Did it two years ago. It's the biggest obstacle race in Europe (or something) and they have a big party in a tent after (we got Dave Pearce) with camping. It was good fun, there are different distances and we met people who had come from all over Europe for it.

It's in May (I'll be in Spain sadly!).

A picture memory came up on my Facebook today of me doing a Tough Mudder which made me realise I need to set myself a new challenge for this year.   What have the E-Fit-Festers set themselves this year?  I've seen a couple of people mention marathons.

Stuck it up a few pages back, but I've got these two:

Haven't signed up yet, but will probably go back and do this again in September and try to break 1hr 50 this time

Like the sound of the TAB, I work on a military base and see the lads and lasses doing this most days.  It's a bonus that I can use their gym so get my workouts done at lunchtime, they put on good circuit classes.

Barns Green isn't too far from me so definitely something I could aim for and get back up to half marathon distance, it has been a while!

The TAB stuff is, bizarrely, great fun.  Bloody hard, but fun.  Second crack at the Paras one, got my eyes on a time improvement :)

The BG Half is good, did it as my first half marathon last year.  It's not massively hilly, but the second half of the course is quite deceptive. Do it!

EDIT: Should add that it's through the lanes and back roads, so it's a really nice scenic run.  I love it round there

Got Brighton Marathon in April, and a couple of half's leading up to it, one at the Olympic Park next week and one as yet unbooked along the canals from Uxbridge > Watford.

Definitely liking the sound of the TAB stuff but likely will wait til after Glasto to sign up to any more big ones.

Also now obsessing about Marathon Des Sables but I might die if I try that
