White stripes not quite the first duo to headline then.

Love Carter - legends (I remember Jimbob played the Leftfield tent in 2007; I only caught the end as I got so battered at Arcade Fire I couldn't find it):

Because neither are white male indie rock bands.

Jay Z opened the door to hip hop artists and mainstream pop stars headlining.

Hip-hop yes, but there's a fair few eighties vintage headliners you could class as pop bands - The Communards and so on.  It was only really post 1995 that it became more dominated by indie and rock

Levellers 94 my first year. And I loved em

Same here - my first Pyramid headliner! Remember my enjoyment only being slightly put off by the young couple violently getting off with each other right in front of me for the whole set.

Fcuk - that was 25 years ago!

You refering to 2017? The set list was just outrageous. I still cannot believe the encores. Truly magnificent.

Let Down is a bit of a blur in my head which is a shame, I think I was so overcome with emotion wheh it started I had a brain prolapse.

Let Down saw me in full on arms around shoulders and singing along mode with a group of complete strangers. Just pulled me into the middle of their group. Amazing scenes Jeff

Maybe it paved a way for a return to pop then, as the 90s and early 00s was very rock band heavy.

That’s 4 a week for 6 years!

Good going for sure.

To clarify, it's live sets, not individual gigs. So I may see 3 or 4 in a night at a showcase, or 12 in a day at a festival. It may be a bit of an under/over estimation, but 2000 is my rough guess.

You just dont get crowds looking that engaged these days...

I said exactly the same when watching it!

crowds up till the early 2000’s getting involved and dancing/pogoing etc

crowds after the early 2000’s - standing still and filming the entire gig on their phone.

Why was the Gorillaz’s set so widely derided from 2010?

Long set length due to replacing U2; lots of people who probably hadn't listened to the new album; didn't play all the hits; some of it was a bit 'arty'; some long pauses between songs while they got guests on and off.

And by his own telling, Damon kept deliberate distance to avoid it looking like a forced "Blur 2009 Pt.II" sequel, but that just worsened the detachment.

For what it's worth, I really enjoyed it, but had spent a couple months utterly rinsing Plastic Beach so was behind it.

Agreed - I listened to the album a lot and enjoyed most of it too.

Jay Z didn't open the door to mainstream pop acts....what do we think Coldplay are?

Hip Hop I agree but Ed and Adele headlined off of their own merit.
