Sorry if Im speaking out of order as I'm now going to mention a canned cider.

Lidl sell a Devon scrumpy for about £2,80 (probs a tad less) for a four pack of 440ml.

This is actually being missold as it is made in (well, at least fermented in) Somerset. Made by Sheppys but without their branding.

6.00% and absolutely delicious.

Trust me on this, worth risking £2.80 next time you are passing a Lidl just to find out.

Right. I've drunk some more now and I'm starting to think it's just regular Sheppy's scrumpy in cans. It only tastes different to the bottles because it's in cans. It doesn't seem to be adulterated with anything at all.

Extraordinary find.

Another upvote for Lidl. My Aldi has nothing drinkable in it, but my local Lidl is perfectly adequate and far cheaper than anywhere else if you’re on a budget.

I really like these from Lidl for under a quid. Perfect. (Beer snobs look away)

You had a bash of em unrefrigerated? I can’t imagine the IPAs being too good, but the fruity bit in the pale might well make it pretty palatable. 99p is insane cheap!

I'll pass your thanks onto daughter #1. She told me about it. Her mate works at Sheppys and told her about it.

Supposed to be a secret 'cos Sheppys think that their name will be devalued if it becomes public knowlege that they supply Lidls. That is why it is called 'Devon Scrumpy'

Thanks from me too, I also made a trip to lidl on your tip and tried the apple cider 4.5%  in pint bottle and the reserve 7.3% in 500ml bottle, sadly neither of those were worth another try, the 4.5% was particularly foul. They are all branded "woodgate" but clearly have different manufacturers. The Sheppys produced "devonshire scrumpy" is however a gem and I'll be back to stock up very soon. If you get any more secrets from Sheppys they'll be gratefully received.

Might pop along to the cricket this week cos I’m off work, so I’ll be trialling unrefrigerated cans. I’ll have a bash of those Lidl scrumpy efforts, I’ll have a couple of Jet Black Hearts, and I’ll see if Tanglefoot stands up to scrutiny as well #importantresearch

Ill also be trialling pork pies and wholegrain mustard ?

My personal beer of choice! Always have 4 packs on Tesco 2 for £9. Not too strong so able to keep on it for a session, no dramas.

I'll take some 440ml cans of generic lager (Tennents most likely or maybe Innes & Gunn) and some Carling Dark fruits.

And will supplement with the smaller size cans of Joker which is my current favourite and some Brewdogs.

Probably load up on Joker and Ceasar Augustus, small cans are great - can chill them fairly quickly in a bucket or basin of water

I find I drink the small cans so fast, id go through 2 of them fasyer than a 500ml one.

I would if they were pale ales/lagers etc, that’s why I prefer kickass barrel aged stouts and ridiculous 10% porters etc - they’re just not downable (unless you really fancy a kip on the floor)

Just trying this, I can’t stand overly sweet, fizzy cider, this stuff is perfect for my tastes, and the price is fantastic! What a find!

In the interests of research, I bought a chilled can of Desperados this morning as my local offy has started selling it in 500ml cans. As white-trash as it is, I am partial to a tequila-flavoured beer in the summer. Interested in the idea of taking some to the festival, but need to road-test it in similar conditions so to see if this is viable.

After letting it warm up in the kitchen for 6 hours whilst blasting some dub reggae at it, I’m going in....

First impressions: Not too bad. The sweet finish offsets the normal horrible taste I find in normal lager when not chilled. Will take my usual 12/16 cans of golden ales, but take some of these when I fancy a change.

Second impression: Why has it got citric acid in it?

Third impression: Will be sticking worse than that down my throat over the five days. 3.5/5

as awful as it sounds, I’m putting a vote in for Tesco’s own premium lager in the grey cans

4.8%, £3.35 for 4 of them and for the price (even in the warm, it has been tested before) it is surprisingly drinkable

will also have a couple of familiar ales to take with me, haven’t seen anything from Shepherd Neame in a can before but hoping one will make itself known before then

Whitstable Bay comes in cans and is a good session ale .... tastes OK at field temperature too.
