That's how they sell it, not how it works.

Ah OK.

Last year Vampire Weekend (EOTR), Tame Impala (Citadel) and At The Drive In (2000Trees (!)) were all marked as exclusives and, er, were exclusive to those festivals.

They sold it well.

Do you know how exclusives work at all?

Touring in America? Really? Is that even an excuse?

I don't know why some of you have to be constantly defending the festival, specially with poor excuses. It's like you got money in it or smt...

"Hey Arianna, would you like to play Glastonbury?"

"Sorry, I've already got gigs in America booked that weekend."

Pffft! What a shit excuse.

Do you think Glastonbury started booking bands last month?

Wow this guy..... really doesnt want to let up does he????

He must have been involved in all the meetings and negotiations to be able to determine that the festival didnt try hard enough.

I'm not constantly defending the festival by the way, I've said in this very thread that the lineup isn't to my taste, but that's the thing, not to my personal taste, it's all subjective. I'm not crying about them not booking certain bands and I'm certainly not accusing them of tokenism.

The only thing I'm defending the festival from is idiotic and ill thought out criticism.

'Sorry Ariana, can you not tour the US for a while so we can pay you a fraction of your fee for the hassle of popping over to the UK for a one off show?'

As said, I was only including Lauryn Hill because of her awful rep as a live act. JJ, I had no idea she had achieved so much. I thought she stuck out like a sore thumb on the line-up (I can literally name one song that she has ever done - Rhythm Nation - and I couldn't even tell you how it goes.). But if the majority are looking forward to her and are excited then that's fair enough, it's a great booking and I'm out step/wrong in that case.

I'm off to buy a ticket Blood Red Shoes at the Thekla (they're touring, have a new album coming and don't seem to have played the fest for over 10 years!).

I'm a little nervous about Lauryn Hill myself, she's undoubtedly incredibly talented but has a reputation for being late, I don't think she'll be able to get away with that at a festival which relies heavily on maintaining timeslots.

Blood Red Shoes, great shout. Played "Fire Like This" to death when it came out. Been off my radar in recent time. Enjoy! That'll be great at the Thekla!

Primavera is kind of where Is started with all of this (their line-up is 50% female I believe). I saw the lineup and thought 'that doesn't look very good compared to previous years'. But as a fully paid up wooly liberal, that didn't sit well with me either (bar I decided not to buy a ticket). I haven't really figured out my opinion on this yet (evidently!) and it just occurred to me again when I saw names like Janet Jackson, which I personally, rightly or wrongly, thought looked anachronistic.

The Primavera line up is awful and a huge departure from what it was. I just wish everything didn't have to be politicised all the time. Festivals should book whoever they want without the likes of Lily Allen piping up and demanding who festivals should be booking.

How do you explain the crappy male artists that have been booked?

Oh, don't get me wrong. The crappiest are the headliners which are just male. It's just I don't get this new thing of booking in terms of ratios. They just should aim to book the best available.

It's nothing a "turn up on time or you won't be getting paid" clause in the contract can't solve.

Are you suggesting Primavera were unwillingly forced to increase the number of female acts for this year because Lily Allen told them to?

To people complaining about the gender ratio:

By probability you'd expect there to naturally be a 50:50 split on average for performers gender. This is not the case - have a look at festivals and check, it's not even close. Therefore there must be something structural stopping this - unless you believe that males are innately better musicians than females.

Festival line-ups are part of that structure, they aren't the entirety by any means and that means that I don't think organisers should take the full brunt of the blame (much like the oscars do for lack of diversity). Unless some part of that structure make a concious effort (whether well-intentioned or driven by something else), it's not going to change. Glastonbury are in an almost unique position of being stable enough to take a risk on getting the 50:50 balance and imo have a greater duty than anyone else to do so.

Re: Lauryn Hill's live reputation, I've seen her twice.   I saw her at Birmingham Academy in 2014 and then just a few months ago at the Arena as part of the Miseducation shows and thought she was absolutely incredible both times.

It's true that she does not play the songs as they are on the recordings anymore and so for casual fans looking to sing-a-long, they may very well be disappointed.  There's a lot of improvising going on with Lauryn visibly conducting the band as she goes.   From a musicianship point of view, it's absolutely fascinating to watch - the level of talent is damn impressive.    Her band are brilliant as well - they'd have to be to keep up with her chopping and changing the arrangements on the spot every night.

If you go in knowing you're not getting the versions you know and love, and you just go along for the ride with what she's doing then it's a great musical experience.

I do think it could fall absolutely flat on the Pyramid though and she'd be far better suited to the West Holts.

Not because of Lily Allen. But if you think Cardi B, Robyn and Carly Rae  Jepsen is what Primavera is all about then I take it you've never been.

The year you went to the Barcelona one was an absolute gem of a line up in all fairness.

The problem with 50/50 is what if you're booking a band like Wolf Alice for example. Why would they count towards it if they're 75% male? How many 50/50 bands are there out there anyway?
