You were one of the first people to downvote @RyanS on the first page for simply asking "Do we just do this sort of thing for female artists?" and I would argue that your persistence amongst other individuals in not just letting the discussion go is part of why this has become more of a heated debate.

If you get offended that someone asks the question, then that's your own issue.  Plenty of folk have made observations about other artists that had similar polls which directly answers the question, but there's a section of male posters that can't seem to let it lie.

'and I would argue that your persistence amongst other individuals in not just letting the discussion go is part of why this has become more of a heated debate.'

Pot calling the kettle black there mate. We'd gone at least a good 30 minutes without a mention to this debate, and here you are, dragging it back up again.

There was clearly a deeper implication to the original question, which has been picked up by a fair few others. I would say I'm surprised that it's flew over your head but I get the impression you're choosing to ignore that fact to put your argument across. I'm directly offended by being labelled as a sexist on here and am really unhappy at where this forum has headed.

Now please, I beg of you, stop posting your nonsense in here. I see absolutely no reason for this conversation to continue but if you want to discuss this further, send me a DM.

Because it was a stupid insinuation that the guy was sexist because he asked how many Janet Jackson songs people know lol.

I'm one of the first to call out people being sexist or anything of the sort on here (the amount of debates I've had on here about female representation at festivals is off the scale by now) but the way this thread has gone is absolutely ridiculous.

Why ? So all festivals can be the same ? Should A7X play at creamfields, or Jools Holland at download ?

The latter two have musical specialisms, Glastonbury doesn't.  Its diversity is its strength.

Currently that isn't reflected by the attendees and they absolutely should be trying to improve that.

How do you suggest they improve the diversity of the attendees ?

By diversifying the lineup...

And weeding out the people who like the 'typical' lineup, got it. I thought Glasto was about peace and love not exclusion but by trying to attract a different crowd you are excluding others.

At the end of the day it's not down to me or you, it's down to Emily and if she wants to get rid of the hippy image and go a different route then that's up to her, it's not like people will stop buying tickets, well not for while anyway.

In what way is booking Janet Jackson connected with any of that?

Excluding people by including more things?

Right you are.

There are a limited number of tickets, some will have to excluded to make for the people 'they're trying to attract', for want of a better phrase.

I was answering a question.

Whew this thread is a mess. Instead of sneering at not thinking you know many songs from someone who's sold over 100 million records (more than Kylie or any other confirmed booking), maybe ask yourself why not and see what the fuss is all about. Her discography between 89-97 is pretty enviable.

As far as her actual songs... All For You, Together Again, Scream, What Have You Done For Me Lately are really recogniseable IMO, even if not much of the general public knew she sang them. Nasty, That's the Way Love Goes, Doesn't Really Matter, Got Til It's Gone, Rhythm Nation are all also pretty well known.

FWIW I'm under 30 and didn't listen to much pop/radio growing up - and I recognised most of those songs when I explored the rest of her music a few years ago. She'd be a great booking and draw a huge crowd even if people in the UK don't know or think they know that many of her songs - her name is big enough that loads would go out of curiosity.

I did say that I had a listen to a few of her most popular hits. Only one I recognised was Scream.

In truth, The Nal put a post about how very not well known her output is to most so I thought I'd see for myself. I don't half regret it now. This place can be toxic.

Fair enough. I find it shocking that anyone wouldn't recognize Together Again or All For You at least. They'd get far more plays than Scream, which is a lot more famous for it's video. But there we go. I was just addressing in general tbh.

You and calgon have put across decent points in favour of JJ tbf. I'm sure she'll go down well.

It's  fair to say that - in the UK at least - her music generally hasn't evolved from pop hits of their era to timeless standards in the way that e.g. Prince tunes like Purple Rain or Kiss have.

That's definitely true. As an interesting comparison point (particularly before he died) - though obviously a bigger star, I would be surprised if much of the GP knew many Prince songs beyond those two (and maybe 1999 and When Doves Cry) - that's certainly the case with me until a few years ago. And obviously, he'd have been an amazing Glasto booking if it had ever happened :(

If the Pyramid  Stage winds up having The Cure, Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue and someone else like, say, Christine and the Queens all on the same day, then fair fucks to the booking team.  You won't  see that anywhere else.

Predicted The Cure - George Ezra - JJ - Kylie on another thread. Could easily replace George with Chris though.
