Just gave the new Brown album a spin - it’s largely forgettable but special mention must go to the last track - Bresking Down The Walls, which is an utter abomination. You haven’t known horror until you’ve heard Ian Briwn adopt a faint Jamaican accent and sing about Babylon while an organ plays in the background.

Agree about that last track.   I thought the rest of it was alright on first listen.   He could do with a decent producer to give it a bit of a boost but otherwise it's alright.  I think I'll be skipping the cover at the end each time though.

Gary Clail of On U Sound/Tackhead fame.  He’s been quiet for a few years ( he’s been working with homeless, ex offenders etc- he practices the social justice he preaches) but hearing some snippets of material and talk of a new album on the horizon. Would be great to see him at Glastonbury; I know Mark Stewart and Adrian Sherwood have been there in recent years but Clail would be a great comeback story.

I loved ‘human nature’ and stuff round that era, Emotional Hooligan.Saw him once or twice, was great. No idea what he’d be like now.

After several listens I actually think Five is up there with Friends in terms of the best work White Lies have produced. New Beirut is lovely as well.

No. 7 in the midweeks, a place higher than Friends started. Going to be a battle on to stay top 10 though.

1 Busted - Half Way There (11.1k) *
2 The Specials - Encore (10.5k) *
3 Ian Brown - Ripples (10.4k) *
4 Motion Picture Cast Recording - The Greatest Showman (6.2k)
5 Claire Richards - My Wildest Dreams (4.9k) *
6 Fredo - Third Avenue *
7 White Lies - Five *
8 Within Temptation - Resist *

Beirut are at 29, fyi.

The new bits I’ve heard have been amazing. He was every bit as important to that 80s scene as any of those others I mentioned and certainly the Tackhead Hard Left/Reality/Mind at the end of the Tether single  trilogy which he was instrumental on were as good as anything that came out from that lot.

Really enjoyed White Lies new album, but then again I’m a massive fan of them so not exacly the best person to judge!

Think they’re excellent live as well. Guaranteed good time if you go see them on their current tour. Never seen them have a show where they haven’t give 100% tbh.

Any other recommended albums out so far this year aside from the below that I should be checking out;

Sharon Van Etten, James Blake, Cherry Glazer, Night Beats, Better Oblivion Community Centre, Unloved, Blood Red Shoes , Press Club (also gave White Lies a spin but it wasn't for me).

Thanks in advance comrades.

I can only repeat the new Girlpool is worth a listen. So far not into all songs, but amongst the better new releases this year for me.

Nothing comes close to SvE, though.
