Lumping the 1975 in with the Courteeners and Catfish & The Lads is a ridiculous disservice.

Some guy on tinder told me that a) catfish and the lads were his favourite band (he didn't say "lads", tbf) and b) he was 34.

So apparently these people do exist.

I just don’t get it. I put them in a group of bands (Courteeners, Catfish etc) who have caught people’s imagination but not mine.

1975 seem to fill a Feeder shaped hole for people.  But headlining is pushing it.

Yeah. I just find it extremely derivative and the lyrics and sentiments are vacuous whilst throwing a few clunky ’big words’ in there to polish the turd.

Please... what am I missing?

It’s not exactly that your missing something others understand but the 1975 are way more popular than catfish etc.

EDIT: They deserve to headline in the same way that Kasabian deserved to headline in 2014. There’s not much more to do to prove headliner status.

If this upcoming album is a success that’s 4 #1 albums. Plenty of acts have headlined in less, plus, I think that ranks pretty high in terms of consistent output by UK bands.

There isn’t many who have had four 1s in a row

The 1975 seem like a perfect headliner nowadays. Clearly big enough to do it but divisive enough to create some "controversy" and cause many a dummy to be thrown. We'll have 6 months of debate about how big a crowd they will draw, should they be playing etc etc and it'll go down well to those who are there, and those who don't see them will rave about what they saw instead and say it looked pants on TV.

Personally I don't really have strong feelings towards them either way. Seem like douches but that sound of yer heart tune is catchy. No debate at all that they are in the frame and perfectly positioned to do it. Just depends if the festival wants to book them over other options. I'm about the festival booking newer acts, but I do think if Blur are around they will get the gig, then FM, Elton, Madonna, Gaga etc for the other two nights. They're absolutely near the top of the odds list though.

Outstanding. Can we just use this as a tagline for any headliner discussions on eFests until the end of time?

Good analysis and I really do want to believe in the latter, that for just one year, the 50th anniversary, they’ll put the brakes on and be decadently anachronistic and that for just one year, the 50th anniversary, the new kids on the block will be happy to sub or headline alternative stages, show some deference, and the headliners are acts of serious and indisputable pedigree.

After that 51st onwards, then go nuts. One Direction, that Babyshark thing, whatever.

I think he's referring to Healy saying something about people being "retarded" in a recent speech.

FWIW he wasn’t calling people retarded, he was saying we will be living in a retarded society if we continue not to properly address climate change over the next few years. Also he’s apologised, for however much that makes any difference.
