I still remember mates of mine coming home from Glastonbury 1998 and telling me how bad it was and until I saw it on TV I didn't quite get what they were saying.

I think there were clips from a band on the Other stage (might have been Catatonia) and seeing just rivers of mud soup!

From my years of going 2007 was defiantly very hard work from the Friday morning onwards....

In '98 the site went from bone dry fields on the Thursday morning to one huge brown lake by Friday, some parts deeper than others. The central market area was horrible. Grim ?

What was the run up like to that?

I know '97 it had been the wettest June for about 100 years...but did the '98 rain catch everyone off guard?  Did it just lash it down the whole of Friday? Is that what happened?

I know my mates who went weren't prepared for it, and iirc it wasn't a washout throughout the whole country.

We arrived on site Thursday the weather was gorgeous and had been for a while before, I remember he ground was fine and the grass had was a light brown colour. Im pretty sure the forecast was ok pre-festival no one took wellies from what I can recall however it basically didn't stop raining from late on the Thursday afternoon until Friday night. I remember reading afterwards that the rain was confined to the south west area, the rest of the country was ok.

We camped in big ground and you could see these huge black clouds coming from the South West up the valley past the tor.

Saturday had yet more rain but it did eventually stop raining by the evening. Sunday was lovely but the damage had been done ???

Good lord that sounds horrendous! So basically it rained non-stop for 36 (ish) hours with no drainage in place :O

The BBC footage from 1998 has recently been uploaded to youtube and you can see from the odd vox pops they do in the campsites and scans of the crowd it looks horrific!

I remember having enough by about 7pm on the Sunday in 2007, but the guy who'd driven was already 8 pints and two pills down and said 'we're here till tomorrow morning so I suggest you get as smashed as possible' - in the vain hope we'd forget how wet it was, I tried to watch Bill Bailey after the Chemical Brothers and my waterproof gave up and my underwear started to get soaked too :(

Potential Hot Take

Constant Rain during the festival > 2016s conditions with constant Rain in the build up to the festival.

Never want to experience 2016s mud ever again. Truly horrific stuff. I'd take being pissed on all weekend over that shit every day of the week.

I watched the whole lot a few months ago.

Nice trip down memory lane as even though I didn't go I watched it all on TV. :)

It does look grim.

But It kind of makes the performances sometimes even better. It certainly happened to me in 2016. The Sunday performances were much more emotional after going through the struggle of the whole weekend. Stuck -> Slip  -> Stuck -> Slip. And repeat for 6 straight days.

2016 was one of my best even though the weather was awful!

I also think a lot more people are prepared to stick it out now even if the weather is crap, as its been noted the site was noticeably more empty in 1998 from the Saturday onwards. I didn't notice many people (if any) give up in 2016....although I do recall quite a few leaving Sunday lunchtime in 2007.

The sun always seems to bring an uplift to the entire site - remember 2011 that it'd been pretty shite from Friday night onwards. By the time Elbow came out on Saturday evening the sun was cracking out and everything seemed just right.  The rain on the Weds morning was horrible as well - soaked through before I'd even got my tent up. Ergh.

Queuing up and setting up in the tent was grim.

i recall as we set up one mate left his tent half put up as he was busting for a piss and came back and found a puddle in the middle of it ?.  A leaked tent before the festival had even started...a new low!

Also churned up the site from the off as it was pretty wet underground before.  Don't think the site really recovered there after. Wednesday afternoon was nice though I think? Got so hammered at the cider bus that I passed out in tent by about 6pm!

I'm sure I read that we had a month's worth of rainfall in 24 hours. That was the year they pumped raw sewage into the dance tent by accident when they attempted to "suck" the mud up ??

The hill by ped gate C turned into a giant mud slide going up or down resulted in carnage.

I'd had enough by Sunday evening ?

Yes, sorry, I have to completely disagree :) The mud in 2016 was awful, but I wasn't wet or cold because it didn't rain much during the festivals. I didn't go to Glastonbury in 2007, but I've been to others when it's rained the whole time and its miserable. My friend who was there in '07 said all his clothes were wet and by Sunday he was definitely ready to go home. I was still sad when it ended in 2016!

I must also concede that I wasn't there in 07. A mate who was said it was relentless but still felt 16 took the biscuit. I reckon the closest I've come to a full washout was 2011, which brightened up considerably on the Saturday but was a bit of a slog for the first two thirds of the fest. That's probably making me feel the way I do until I have to endure a proper washout.

Which obviously won't be this year ....

I wasn't there in 2016 but I was in 2007 and 2011, and 2007 was infinitely worse than 2011. 2011 was quite nice in comparison.

2011 was shit on the way in but got progressively better, didn’t bother me that much.

2016 was bad all the way through and very tiring.

I wasn’t there for 2007, but constantly raining is the worst possible weather so that must have been the worst one.

I was there is 07 and 16. 16 was worse for me. Being rained on was grim, but you could still get about. The sticky mud is the worst.
