  1. 1. If The Cure were to headline would you be there? I'm intrigued due to the varied opinions of them on here.

    • Yes - Definitely, regardless of who else is on the other stages.
      199
    • More than likely - Depending on strength of the clashes on other stages.
      260
    • Unlikely - Know a couple of songs but there would probably be something else on you'd watch instead.
      192
    • No - Never been a fan so will definitely be elsewhere.

In terms of not knowing any songs, listen to Friday I'm In Love, Boys Don't Cry and The Lovecats. You'll probably have heard them somewhere (although they don't play The Lovecats live these days).

Disintegration is their best album and may be my favourite album of all time, but as Gnomicide said just give their Greatest Hits a whirl. It's full of big tunes and they play most of it live. That's how I first got into them when they got announced for R&L in 2012.

Another vote for disintegration, my fave 2 singles are off that album. Pictures of you and lullaby.

And as @clarkete posted, standing on a beach compilation album is a good start.

I think non fans have this impression everything they do is dreary....just not so, especially when you hear it live.

I understand that perception, as it's the same opinion I hold with The Smiths. Other people would be all over a reunion though.

Radiohead are hardly a bubbly option.

That must be the biggest under statement I have read on here ?

I think Morrissey is a massive cock womble but I would betray every principal and moral I possess if they ever reformed.

I love that phrase cock womble. True enough with Morrissey for sure though! It's funny how some bands you just "get" others leave you cold. Boring if we were all the same.

Are you being funny? It's got some great songs, but what you've said isn't really true.

Obviously if you are, then I apologise for spoiling it ?

Pornography is great if a bit uncomfortable, but yes, I was being facetious.

The Smiths have always been a guilty pleasure for me. Morrissey is a knob though. The sad part is that I actually feel let down by his behaviour this year, just so disappointed in how he had turned out.

One thing you can say about the Cure is they let the music do the talking and I have always admired them for that.

Bob Smith is a humble guy he said in an interview he still gets nervous going out on stage and that it isn't natural and if it feels natural to be stood playing to thousands of people you shouldn't be doing it.

Just looking through recent Cure set lists and they are huge! Bestival in 2016 was 27 songs and plenty others are over 30. I guess they’ll trim down for a pyramid headline slot?

Foo fighters squeezed 20 songs in last year even with all of Dave grohls waffling

The Cure just confirmed for EXIT in Serbia.

  • June 16th: Firenze Rocks, Italy
  • June 21-23th: Hurricane/Southside, Germany
  • June 28th: Rock Werchter, Belgium
  • July 4th: EXIT, Serbia
  • July 17th: Ejekt, Athens, Greece
  • July 17-20th: Colours of Ostrava, Czech Republic

Open'er in Poland is same week as EXIT. Would make sense for them to be in Portugal/Spain the next weekend (11-12-13 July) to do Mad Cool/NOS Alive/BBK Bilbao. Another option would be TRNSMT the same weekend, but guess not.

This is exactly the feeling I had being a 'non fan'...I've persisted and I'm impressed actually. Maybe the recorded stuff does sound a bit ploddy or something but the live stuff I've seen is great! Maybe I'll become a fan soon ?

Where do the rumours they are headlining come from? They seem to think they have a bad relationship with the festival, why is that? And why would they play if they did?

Neil's had info from a couple of sources that they're playing, and before that someone on here's son met their bassist's daughter at Reading and she told him they're headlining Glasto. Plus they've now been announced for loads of festivals around Glasto and the organiser of one of those fests said it may be their last festival run, so it'd make sense for Glasto to get them one last time before they're no longer an option.

Not long ago Robert Smith was asked on the radio if they'd headline Glasto and  he said they would but they haven't had the best relationship with the festival in the past and he doesn't know if they forgive and forget. Have to bear in mind, though, that if they were booked to headline they can't just spill the beans on air so it was probably just a throwaway comment to get around the question without answering either way.

that was back in April, so I reckon it's quite likely that they hadn't been approached at that point.

If The Cure do headline, I hope they get given a 2 hour slot max.   Their longer slots are all well and good for proper fans but for the more casual listeners you find at festivals, it doesn't go down too well.

I enjoyed their Reading set but it was a bit of a slog at times - the crowd really thinned out after about 10 songs or so.

At BST, however, they absolutely nailed it and it's that sort of set they need to bring to Glastonbury.   All the hits with a few deep cuts to keep the fans happy without so many that it alienates the rest of the crowd.

I've been a cure fan all my life and right from the start. If you are new to The Cure I'd advise starting right at the beginning and working your way through in order. Watch out for 'Pornography' though, it's a bit of a curve ball.

I last saw them almost two years ago at Wembley and they were fucking sensational.

Having said all that, I just wish Depeche Mode could play (what is the problem there? Money?). They are adored all over the world for good reason and I'd love to see them win over Glastonbury.

If some people want a longer set and some people want a shorter set, surely the people who want a shorter set can just show up late or leave during the set? Let them play for as long as they want to IMO

Well I think the main point for those wanting a shorter set is that it'll be more condensed, with a higher ratio of hits to random album tracks. If you turn up last and miss, say, Lovesong, Just Like Heaven and In Between Days, and still have to stand through a load of stuff you don't know, that doesn't really help. And if you leave early you'll miss all the rest of the hits that they do in their encores.
