Now, this is just weird. WTF?. Help

Recommended Posts

Hi Neil/Everyone,

I generally browse eFests via Opera on a Vista OS (I know, I know).

I've been trying to access efests from about Sunday (I think) and just keep getting:

This site can’t be reached

The web page at https://www.efestivals.co.uk/forums/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Took Neil's advice via Twitter re clearing the cache and going directly through the links provided. Used CCleaner and then also, just to be sure, directly cleared the cache through Opera itself. Still no dice. Every thing else on my speed dial shows no problems. So, why can I not get eFests?

It gets weirder because I tried other browsers (Komodo, Chrome (which is Opera isn't it?)) and still got the same thing. BUT. Internet Explorer (64-bit), which I pretty much only boot up on Glasto T day these days, let me in through my old favourites toolbar icon. Which is what I am typing this via. (The spell check tool sems to huv disapeared thogh).

I've also been able to access efests via my Sony PS Vita, so I'm guessing it's not like my IP address has been blocked for suspected spam or anything.

IE and PS Vitas are not good browsing experiences. (I don't own a smart phone).

Does anyone have any idea wtf may be going on? Apart from me being relatively technically backward I mean!

there haven't been any changes to the setup (that might affect user interaction) since Friday - when the site was swapped over to https from http.

So if your problems started on Friday, it might be related to that. How well does your aging set-up support https? Can you get to the main front page (not the forums)?

As you say, the issue appears to be something with your set-up rather than being somehow blocked from accessing here (else you wouldn't get thru using IE).

I've just googled "opera can't access https site" and got a number of different suggestions from the top answer.

- corrupt install of Opera, cured by full uninstall and re-install.
- anti-virus software is blocking it. For Avast AV, you might have to "Activate HTTPS scan" on Web protection settings.
- lack of support within older versions of Opera for SSL encryption (which is what https relies on).

Of those 3, I think the last seems the most likely as 64-bit IE is working OK.

If you can access this http-served image:-
http://www.efestivals.co.uk/photos/glastonbury/2013/s50/FatoumataDiawata-Glastonbury2013-SAW01.JPG
but not the same image served by https:-
https://www.efestivals.co.uk/photos/glastonbury/2013/s50/FatoumataDiawata-Glastonbury2013-SAW01.JPG

... then it's definitely related to your set-up's ability to handle https.

Best cure I can suggest is to try updating Opera to a newer version.

Thank you so much for that lengthy and considered reply.

To the tune of Sister Sledge's He's The Greatest Dancer:

Oh what a Wow,

He's a Great Webmaster.

I will try the above when I have the time. Work approaches.(sic?). Time for bed.

(Via IE obvs)
