Download - distances

Hey all - we're attending Download for the first time this year.  Can't get there until mid afternoon on the Friday.  We'll be driving (and parking) and have general camping tickets.  Can anyone who has previously attended give me an approx. distance between the car park and camp site and also between the camp site and stage area?  Additionally, are you allocated a specific campsite or is it first come, first served.  Having done Glastonbury, I know you need to be there about a day before you want to see any of the bands (!) and I'm concerned we won't get to see the start of A7X if we don't arrive until mid afternoon. TIA

If you're coming Friday I would get there as early a possible as most campers will have turned up by then so may take you a while to find a suitable camping spot. Depends where you camp for distances but I have trouble walking and I can get from campsite to the arena in about 25-30 mins. The car park again it depends where you park but it's gonna be at least an extra 15 but I believe they run a shuttle bus from the car park to the campsite which may help. BTW my times may be a bit off they are rough estimates. I haven't used the car park since 2011. There have been times after the bands have finished when I'm hurting a lot and there are a lot of people that it has taken me around an hour to get from arena to campsite.

That’s great information - thank you. I’m also assuming that we won’t be allocated any specific colour campsite - we’ll just be pointed in the direction of the one which has most space remaining. Is that correct?

That would be right. They used to open the campsites slowly but think that has stopped now and by Friday they would all be open anyway. Just speak to a steward and they'll be able to point you in the direction of space.
