Listened to loads more new stuff this year - probably a bit too early for lists but I already cannot see past Kali Uchis for album of the year.

Whilst it's production and guest list list ticks all the boxes for the chin strokers, it's just a cracking album of pop, soul and RnB.

This is efests, it's never too early for a list.

Ok, based on my Last.FM account (which isn't all encompassing), the most listened to albums released in 2018 are:

  • Isolation
  • Tranquility Base
  • Dirty Computer
  • Ye
  • Daytona
  • Cocoa Sugar
  • No Shame
  • Ruins
  • Singularity
  • Babelsgerg

Special shout outs to Saturation III and Ctrl which I only got into this year.

Off the top of my head in no order I'd imagine it would look something like this.

Boy Azooga

Ty Segall

Parquet Courts

Hinds

Goat Girl

The Voidz

Ezra Furman

Dream Wife

Lovely Eggs

Confidence Man

Although I can't be bothered ordering them PC definitely top. I feel like Death Grips should be in there but I've only had it a few hours.

A gorgeous Friday when we should all be on the farm, clearly getting not a lot done at work.  Instead my mind turns to creating order out of chaos, and no better way to do it than creating a list.  Specifically 15 albums of 2018 thus far...

Given my carefully trained ear, technical understanding of the recording process, and deep lyrical insights, it's based on the detailed and thought-through criteria of "stuff I like to have in my ears". Basically just albums I've been coming back to since hearing them. No particular order.

Little Dark Age - MGMT

The Magic Gang - The Magic Gang

Sky High and Submarine - Mono Club

Singularity - Jon Hopkins

Illusion of Perfection - Spencer Brown

Wide Awake! - Parquet Courts

Tell Me How You Really Feel - Courtney Barnett

Resistance Is Futile - Manic Street Preachers

1, 2, Kung Fu! - Boy Azooga

Hope Downs - Rolling Blackout CF

Have at it...

You are not very good at counting.

It started as 15, but I realised that was weird.  But then I forgot to change the number at the top.

I'll not lie, any work I've done today is going to be checked on Monday morning for errors

Oh go on then (in the order I remember them):

Snail Mail - Lush
Camp Cope - How to Socialise & Make Friends
Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy (Face to Face)
Parquet Courts - Wide Awake!
Saba - Care For Me
Pusha T - Daytona
DJ Koze - Knock Knock
Iceage - Beyondless
Amen Dunes - Freedom
Ty Segall - Freedom's Goblin

Probably forgotten a bunch but those were the ones off the top of my head.

Also: despite having prematurely dunked on it a bit I've actually come away fairly positive from that Gorillaz album. Much better than Humanz on first impression - it's very much a Damon solo album but tbh I should've realised that was something I needed, and it's probably a better Damon solo album than Everyday Robots was anyway. It's not earth shattering or anything but it's a nice little collection of mostly good Damon songs and that does it for me.

Fuck forgot all about Ought, Hookworms, U.S. Girls and Skee Mask. Mine might need revising. Death Grips is probably in mine tbh but felt a bit premature putting it there with my first listen being today.

If you've not put Young Fathers on your list, get back to your happy meal and leave the lists to adults.

As this is eFests it's also never too early to be condescending ;)

Lots in here that deserve honourable mentions for mine - Ought, Hookworms, DJ Koze, Shame, Superorganism, Young Fathers, Nakhane, Jorja Smith, Father John Misty all up there.

Agree with @rhg_99, a very good year so far. Genuinely reignited my new music mojo this year.

I admire you for putting Death Grips in there, I sort of thought of that as a layer year album but at this rate it's got a top 10 spot fer sher. Here's hoping they tour. (And headline 2019)
