hasn't made any impression on me with either.

Carry on. :)

hahaha, too much Prince in there for you, Neil?

This new album is pretty good, not quite up there with Archandroid for me, well not yet anyway. But it's got some absolute bangers on there, no doubt. Anybody got any news on a vinyl release?

Winding back a bit:

Janelle Monae's the answer, your question is "What's poppin'?"

I'm being unfair, there's some good moments on there. But for someone whose fans and whole robot imagery/mythology keep insisting she's some sort of arch-futurist, is it supposed to sound quite so retro?

Afro-futurist, surely - which by definition is rooted in existing and historical African culture.

Though that's by the by.  She seems to have sacked that off, more or less.  To my ears (admittedly after only one listen) this is just pretty straightforward pop music - it doesn't sound especially futurist but I'm not sure that it's just all retro either.  Lyrical content aside, it's clearly a swing for the mainstream.

Hasn't the album arrived accompanied by an SF film? And there's definitely a lot of human/machine stuff still in there. Which is fine, I guess, but the computer references sound more Alta Vista than Big Data and a lot of the songs sound like they could have been on an early 90s Prince album.

Django Jane is good though.

Yeah, fair enough. Not seen the movie.

Early days for me and it's far from a masterpiece....but I'm still enjoying it.

Maybe part of the issue with artists who release albums so infrequently is the burden of expectations.  If they whacked out a couple a year then if you didn't like one then there'd be another along in a minute.

Another review rolls in for Tranquility Hospital and the lads. The pull-quote "either genius, or the sound of a man unravelling" doesn't appear to be answered in the review so I think they sit on the fence a bit here, but it'll be interesting for anyone tuned in I guess. To make such a huge risk - one that's almost certainly gonna be inaccessible - is bat guano, to say Arctic Monkeys only had to paint by numbers and become the world's biggest rock band.

Re: Dirty Computer. It's hard not to feel disappointed a little bit as the first two singles released made it look like it was gonna be something monumental and instead it's surprisingly shallow in places, but overall it's pretty good with a few wicked jams on it nonetheless. Screwed is a whopper.

Agreed, posed more actual questions than answers but makes the release all that more interesting. Have to say that the author lost credibility when she described AM as 'near perfect'.

I'm away when Artics' latest comes out so it's only gonna have a few days to impress before Parquet Courts take over my life (again).

AM were my favourite band 10 years ago so I reckon I'll probably always like them to some degree, if they can be good at the same time it's definitely a bonus.

Public reaction to this is gonna be great. It's one thing that it's seemingly a total left turn for them but that the critics (so far) seem so divisive and unsold on it is interesting as I'd started to get the idea it'd be like their Kid A - different, but ultimately incredible. Can't say I've ever really been excited about the release of a new AM album but I'm pretty stoked to hear this one, for better or for worse.

It does seem pretty crazy but I have to admire their audacity if true and it'll be an interesting listen, I guess its maybe comparable to them changing their sound after their debut to avoid becoming predominately a lads band.

Much like (the current greatest UK band) The Cribs, Arctic Monkeys get an undeserved bad rep round here. Buzzing for the new album, if I get as good a shower anthem (apologies to my flat mate) as Sweet Dreams, TN we're in business.

Other than the use of the word "current" here I think we might be the same person.
