I'm being unfair, there's some good moments on there. But for someone whose fans and whole robot imagery/mythology keep insisting she's some sort of arch-futurist, is it supposed to sound quite so retro? She seems to have sacked that off, more or less. To my ears (admittedly after only one listen) this is just pretty straightforward pop music - it doesn't sound especially futurist but I'm not sure that it's just all retro either. Which is fine, I guess, but the computer references sound more Alta Vista than Big Data and a lot of the songs sound like they could have been on an early 90s Prince album. Maybe part of the issue with artists who release albums so infrequently is the burden of expectations. The pull-quote "either genius, or the sound of a man unravelling" doesn't appear to be answered in the review so I think they sit on the fence a bit here, but it'll be interesting for anyone tuned in I guess. To make such a huge risk - one that's almost certainly gonna be inaccessible - is bat guano, to say Arctic Monkeys only had to paint by numbers and become the world's biggest rock band. Re: Dirty Computer. It's hard not to feel disappointed a little bit as the first two singles released made it look like it was gonna be something monumental and instead it's surprisingly shallow in places, but overall it's pretty good with a few wicked jams on it nonetheless. AM were my favourite band 10 years ago so I reckon I'll probably always like them to some degree, if they can be good at the same time it's definitely a bonus. Public reaction to this is gonna be great. It's one thing that it's seemingly a total left turn for them but that the critics (so far) seem so divisive and unsold on it is interesting as I'd started to get the idea it'd be like their Kid A - different, but ultimately incredible. Can't say I've ever really been excited about the release of a new AM album but I'm pretty stoked to hear this one, for better or for worse. Hadn’t listened to the most recent track she released and that may well be my favourite on the album. Can see that being on my AOTY shortlist alongside the Uchis long player come December. It does seem pretty crazy but I have to admire their audacity if true and it'll be an interesting listen, I guess its maybe comparable to them changing their sound after their debut to avoid becoming predominately a lads band.
