Not entirely on topic, but is Manchester a good place for gigs? Not just huge acts at arenas and stadiums, but little acts too.

I've spent a lot of money this year on travelling to concerts and now I'm thinking it might be a good idea to move closer to the action next year. London has countless concerts but it's too expensive

Manchester is the best city in the country for numerous reasons. The people, great venues, atmosphere, musical heritage, creativity, history, sport...

I'm from Devon and I try to visit at least half a dozen times a year. I'd do more if it wasn't for the God damn M6.

You'd have to live way out in the sticks to be somewhere where public transport after a gig isn't an option. If you live somewhere with a direct bus, met, or train into town you'll be fine.

Check what transport links are like where you live tho. I used to live by Salford quays and in the daytime my walk to work was 35 mins, but in the nighttime I didn't want to have to walk right through stab central in the dark so I had to get the met, which went right around the houses so it was usually an hour getting home once changing trams and waiting times factored in. Now I live in Failsworth which is about 2 hours walk into town, but the tram takes only about 20 mins and run all day at intervals of about 5 mins.

You live in Failsworth mate. I am only up the rd from you then.

Thanks folks. Any recommendations on neighbourhoods/boroughs? Only ever moved to little towns so a huge city is somewhat intimidating

My Mum lives in Sale (where I also grew up). It’s on the nicer side of Manchester, imho, good transport links, close enough to the city and not as expensive as if you go further out.

Fwiw, I’ve never found it that rough or nasty, no worse than any other city.

To be fair the basic rule for pretty much every city everywhere is to avoid slap bang in the middle.

Albert Hall has gone down in my estimations recently. Beer is stupidly expensive in there and the last three gigs I've been to there have just been full of scousers talking.

Yes is the place to be.

Weirdly it's an improvement on what was there pre-commonwealth games. You think it's a shithole now...?

Yeah my parents often get confused when I try to say it's a shithole, say it used be a proper dive back in the day. My mum even goes as far as to say the IRA bomb improved it because nobody got killed and they built new stuff over the shit old stuff that got bombed which is a bit of a ??? take on things.

I thought you might be (although personally I'd say that Newton Heath is down the road, and up is towards Oldham).

Oops, talked shit about scoucers, now you're getting banned. How soon ye forget the events of 2013.

Yeah the drinks at the Albert Hall are a shit show, and they charge about £4 for the cloakroom cash only. Fuck off lads. It's a decent venue, but sold out shows can be a bit of a pain if you're not there early. Much prefer the Deaf Institute and Gorilla anyway.

Gorilla is hampered by the fooking loud air con they have in there. Otherwise nice venue.

No chance it was worse pre commonwealth games. It is an eye sore now with a load of stupid looking buildings lumped there. There was not the amount of drugs prevalent as there are now. The bus terminus was a bit dodgy as that was where you had to get a match bus or the P11 to Maine road.

The actual gardens were a far better place to be though during the 80's and early 90's.

Favourite place in Manchester was the Star & Garter. Knackered old pub round the back of Piccadilly Station that for years hosted the best night out in the city - Smile. Was in there most Saturdays between 2004 and 2010.

A vague mate of mine dj'd for Smile.... they still have occaisional events I think, or did up to recently. Popped up on his facebook anyway.

Got tickets to see Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and The Murlocs at the Thekla in Bristol (two different nights in February) for £11 each

Even in an age where ridiculous band names are commonplace 'Psychedelic Porn Crumpets' stands out.

It's a terrible name, innit? Aussie psych bands seem to be on a mission to ridiculously out-moniker each other.

Really decent band though. For the past 3 or 4 years Australia is where my favourite guitar-based music has been coming from. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Pond, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, The Murlocs, The Babe Rainbow, DZ Deathrays...see what I mean?
