The festival don't take a percentage cut of the traders profits so I can't see them caring how much money they make.

Maybe it could be a subtle way to discourage people from bringing in loads of junk that they don't really need which then gets left behind?

Ah, didn't know that. Second point - very likely!

If anything, the searches for volunteers, traders, staff etc. should be more thorough than for those with tickets as I would say that's where the bigger threat is rather than those who registered for tickets and joined the F5 madness.  Hopefully, the searches tomorrow will be proportionate.

Let's be realistic, they're not going to find explosives in someone's bag.  A bomber won't queue for several hours, hand over their bag and say "oops, you got me". They'd be setting it off long before that point.

I'm sure security/police are well aware of this and will do all they can to move people out of the public access areas and onto site quickly.

... and knives?

I think people need to think of this from the eavis`s and other festival organisers point of view, it is widly known there is an increased security risk at the moment, if they didn't increase the level of security at the festival and something did happen can you imagine the criticism that would come their way in all directions. Not to mention the personal guilt?

When your willing to shoulder the responsibility for the safety of tens of thousands of people then maybe you can judge but until then I think we should be more understanding of whats behind this. Would the police for example have even allowed the festival to go ahead without the increased security? If Glastonbury `hadn't` been willing to make any changes they may have seen it as an unacceptable risk esp with the amount of people involved and revoked the license..

I am not a fan of it myself but I understand why its being done, this sadly is the current world we live in, Its only on the gates into the festival anyway so many drama queens here, people talking as if you wont be able to leave your tent without a pat down. By all accounts once your in your in, sorted, festival as normal.

As I said its easy to judge the festival organisers for taking these steps, calling them draconian etc....but its not you whose taking the responsibility for all these peoples safety is it?

Just be sensible, bring water, have your hat and sunscreen on hand and just chill out in the line have a laugh with the people around you, you think the security themselves have a nice time being stuck in this heat searching people? they will have just as much interest as you as getting people through as quick as they can. Go easy on them, have a laugh with them, dont be a dick to people just trying to do their job, and once you are finally inside just enjoy yourself as you always have. Simples.

As many have pointed out, this extra security does not make anyone safer from terrorist attacks it only causes festival goers more inconvenience, worry and discomfort. The Manchester arena attack happened outside in the queue, the attack yesterday happened down the road from the mosque, not inside it. The recent attacks have adapted to our high surveillance state and gone low tech using things likes knives and vehicles as weapons.

The lunatics will come up with plans to suit what ever situation they have available to them, when one option becomes unviable, they will simply choose another option. The only way to prevent terrorist attacks is to prevent people from wanting to mindlessly kill in the first place.

All these "draconian" knee-jerk laws being put into place are only preventing us from doing things not the terrorists, as you can see by turning on the news.

"Would the police for example have even allowed the festival to go ahead without the increased security?" I think this sums up why this makes people so uneasy.

oh for fucks sake we`re talking maybe an extra bit of time in the line, that is all!-sit down, chill out, have a beer with the people around you, people are blowing this out of all proportion that is the problem....once your inside the fest it wont matter to fuck anyway and we`ll all be laughing at the sheer drama of this thread.

As for what I saId about the police allowing the festival to go ahead, that goes for all large events, if they dont think things are being done safely or peoples safety is being compromised they have the power to prevent an event taking place that was my whole point, weather you belive it effective or not glastonbury esp with the number of people involved had to be seen to be doing `something`  Its all very well for you to say `well this wont happen`.......because if it did happen, you wouldnt be the one having fingers pointed at you for not doing more to prevent it, thatd be the eavis`s which is also my point.

Do they empty the entire contents of your bag onto the table or just have a rummage through?

I think it varies from a quick pat down of the bag to a full check. I got the torch in the top and a few squeezes option. Of my bag... obviously.

Apologies for posting in multiple threads

Just been in twice via Gate B. Normally use Gate D which is bigger. Today is a staff/ volunteer day so tomorrow will be different.

A narrow gate only two search tables today. Bag check for everyone separate queue for this with No bag only. Everyone else in one queue.

Everyone checked but looking for obvious hard objects only. Everything else passed through OK.

Take your time at the tables. I nearly lost some clothes.

Security nice and friendly. More bag search desks will be added tomorrow. Checks only added 10 to 15 mins to our entry but will be longer queues tomorrow. We will only know tomorrow whether all bags continue to be checked.

Have a great one. You will be here soon!

Seeing as we'll be queuing at the height of the day I'm seriously considering constructing a mobile sun shelter from survival blankets and sticks or something. Hmmm.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I think the easiest thing would be to tape a survival blanket over a golf umbrella, but wanna go a little bigger to cover more people.

A cursory check in the van from a very friendly security guy on the way in to camper van west. No queues and straight in at 12:30

Saw a couple of bottles of wine being confiscated but no different to previous years.

I can confirm it's fucking hot so the cold beer is off setting the sweat being lost from putting the tent up!!

It is what it is, best thing we can do is accept it, be helpful and respectful to the guys doing it and hopefully they won't take to long with you.

Had my Swiss Army knife confiscated at PGB this afternoon.  In years past I've brought an axe for firewood and a kitchen knife for cooking.  Be aware. No reasoning with meathead security

I think that pretty reasonable tbh...

That is meathead. I'll bet the camping stores are still selling them. This was at the Pedestrian Gate not the Car Park entrance right?

I think it's bollocks. We're going camping for five days ffs, not entering a nightclub for a couple of hours. Back in the day we all had them when we were seven year old cub scouts and most of us aren't kids any more.

/old man rant

Oh well, mines packed now. I will leave it in the car. It's easily the most useful thing I've ever found. I've had it for over thirty years now (though I shall tell them it was a gift from my mother) and I'll be buggered if I let someone confiscate it. As I've said before in this thread, penknives are totally legal to carry in the UK.

Hit and miss then, then held our coach at the bus station then gave us an escort to gate c... Told us to line pur bags up off the coach for a search.

After a little debate (as we are camped just outside gate c.   Let us all go. Made sense. Still got axe and knife :).

Going in gate c.. Just a had a day sack which they glanced in... Not much help, more a gloat we are camped and coiiiidersflowing!

Hehe, confiscating penknives is pure and simple bullshit. How many catering stalls are there on site? Hundreds. How many knives, cleavers etc on those stalls? It must total thousands. But no, we'll spend our time getting tiny penknives confiscated. Farcical.

I've purchased some high strength tensile steel tent pegs due to the state of the ground. 12 of them. They're way more lethal than a swiss army knife, and easier to use in an offensive manner I suspect. Hope they don't confiscate them, or I'll be holding my tent down with cans of cider.

Good!!! The whole point of the checks is to confiscate items like this!!

I'm confused, we're being asked to pack light and people are taking axes? I know we're camping but it's at a festival not a bivouac in the highlands. Carrying a pen knife these days? What does one do with it these days? I would say out of all the people who carry knives nowadays the majority are for nefarious purposes.
