I agree with you, the one thing I don’t want to happen though is for her to become one of those acts which only does mid-sized festivals because they book her as a headliner. I don’t want her to avoid the big guns festivals just because she’s unlikely to headline them.

I don’t want her to become like the strokes… basically

Or Bon Iver? Well bummer, go buy a million copies of the album to make it seem that she is top queen then. Or buy all the tickets to her tour. Tbf, during Pure Heroine she was even having trouble selling out shows. She was hot off of Coachella and the album release, booked mid size venues in the u.s and lots didnt sell out. The arena tour in north america despite having some good support acts didnt sell well for Melodrama. Lorde didnt succeed whereas Billie Eilish has flourished and its the same cycle for a young female artist thats seen as “weird”, “goth” or  “alternative”. The record industry finally got it right.

It's weird reading this thread, as I always just assumed Lorde was absolutely massive. Really surprised at the size of the venues she seemed to be playing on the last tours! (as in how small they are)

Arcade Fire were headlining arenas on their second album. Lorde was struggling to sell out academy venues. They weren't just critically popular - they were actual popular too. Besides, they came at a point in time where those sorts of bands could actually rise to headline status, a new artist to rise like Arcade Fire won't happen in all probability.

Robyn is the perfect comparison. She went from brief chart success to making interesting, personal pop without the desperation to chart well. She gets a lot of respect for it and plays to loyal fans and even headlines a festival or two. They can't all headline Glastonbury, as nice as a fresh angle on headliners would be.

Think Arcade Fire headlined Reading the year before too.

They were already headliner status before Glasto.

Lorde ain’t headlining anything like that size in the UK any time soon.

Err YES. I thought it was 21st?! Gimmeeeeeeeee

I wouldn't take it as gospel as there's been no official announcement but publications such as Dork are now jumping on the hype train as well. Apparently it's due to some leaked clips that have been hovering around which is a bit of a disappointment

The leaked clips are disappointing in terms of the quality of the single, or disappointing that it's leaked ahead of time?

Disappointing that it's leaked ahead of time, I haven't listening or sought out to myself but I never like when artists are forced to adjust their plans due to leaks. Especially when it's an artist such as Lorde who I can imagine had dates thought out of a particular reason.

Aye, definitely agree. Must be a right kick in the balls. Also knowing someone/a company you work with and trust has broken that confidence must be really disappointing.

The George Michael inspiration is very distracting. It's pleasant and nice to hear her try something new, but yeah – if the entire album's in this very loose summery vein I'm not sure how it's going to go down as festival headliner material next summer.

Saw somebody comment on Reddit saying the whole album was very downbeat and non-bangery, although I have no idea if that person was in the know or just talking shite.

Got faith that it’ll be good, but I’d certainly prefer some bangers over a whole mellow vibe like this single.
