Fair play, I wasn't around when they were in their peak but I assumed random album tracks like Push, A Night Like This, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep and Grinding Halt wouldn't be recognised by any more people in the crowd than random Disintegration tracks, especially as it's probably their biggest or second biggest album.

I was heavily into The Cure a long time ago, but even in the days of tapes, I used to either skip or totally tune out of the really dreary guitar w*nkery tracks.  I could hum all of those tracks of the top of my head, but put the title track on from Disintegration and didn't particularly recognise it.  I mean, it was vaguely familiar, but if you told me it from Pornography or one of the filler tracks from Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, I'd have believed you.

You may be right. Ultimately they were never really the sort of band that really crossed-over, more of a huge cult band, and it was fans rather than joe public that bought the albums. Friends who saw them at BST told me that even there the crowd was a bit restless during parts of the set. I would have thought though that a Glastonbury set would be 5 or 6 songs shorter than their own headline show. If you’re playing to a non-partisan crowd, that would be to their benefit

Yeah I agree with that. I love them and both times I've seen them (Leeds Fest 2012 and Wembley Arena 2016) I wished they could have kept playing despite doing 2.5 hours 32 songs each time, but at Glastonbury I think they'd be better off shaving half an hour from that and cutting some of the less festival-friendly tracks.

Said the other day, the hits plus the goodies like Plainsong and From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea and I'm golden.

Plainsong can get in the (Deep Green) Sea.  That's not a festival track.

Surely there's zero chance of a Madonna/Cure/McCartney trio? Maybe one of them at most...

And I like all of those artists individually too, but I just can't see Glastonbury having three "senior" artists as headliners and completely avoiding a younger headliner. Not after all that has been said in the past about promoting new artists to the bigger stage etc

If they've managed to wrangle both Madge and Macca they're not going to turn around and tell them sorry, we've promised that slot to Royal Blood.

Especially because Drenge are more deserving of that slot than Royal Blood, by virtue of their second album not being an utter pap remake of the first.

Yeah true enough - At least not all three though... Even the unsubstantiated rumour alone sounds terrible... Not quite as bad as the idea of Royal Bloody headlining though.

That was the awful year of the crush. Kiss were (are) shit too.

As it was in the good old days, you went with a load of mates, passed through the gates and didn't see them until the end. One of our group was in the GnR melee and woke up in the the medical tent (fortunately for him). I wasn't aware how serious it all was until an announcement was made as it finished.

Yeah, I had no clue until the end either. I was in that G'n'R crowd, jumping up and down, having a whale of a time. I was over to the right of the stage though and it looked like the real problem was on the left.

Still baffles me how they approached that gig. They were on their way to establishing themselves as festival headliners and got a one off gig subbing the Pyramid Stage a few months before their new album came out, and instead of making it as crowd pleasing as possible and trying to garner some interest in them from the people in the crowd or watching on TV who weren't already fans they did that.

Something along these lines would have been perfect, and is the same length as the setlist they played. The new single plus one unreleased song (which was to be their next single), plus most of their other biggest songs. Stupid band.

1. Sea of Love

2. Fake Empire

3. The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness

4. Don't Swallow the Cap

5. Abel

6. Guilty Party

7. Mistaken For Strangers

8. I Need My Girl

9. England

10. Bloodbuzz Ohio

11. Mr November

12. Terrible Love

This list looks impressive or at least much better to any fan but for me it just shows that the problem wasn't their choice of songs to play but actually the time they were given. If they were to play a regular 75 minutes sub set they could have add another 3 songs (lets say Don't Swallow the Cap, Abel and Mistaken For Strangers - the missing song froms this list) and Voila! We would say and feel much different about that set. In short, I blame you Mr. Grohl.

I went to the Rebel Heart gig in Manchester that can only be described as a hot mess, so I feel pretty soured by that whole experience unfortunately. Imagine that in full flight - and definitely with Like a Prayer - she'd be something special.

Just read the setlist for this. A tyrefire.

There's a lot of pages on this thread so apologies if I'm going over something that's already been said!

What do people think about Eminem?

Has he ever played before?

He's never played before, and probably with good reason: His material doesn't really fit the ethos of the festival, is notoriously pretty shite live/raps over a backing track, and would also cost more than Glastonbury could afford/be willing to pay. Probably just pop up at Reading/Leeds every couple of years, or possibly Wireless.

Yeah that makes sense!
