Will Arctics still be touring in June of 2020? I think they are more likely for next year.

I have them down for next year too but I don't think it's impossible that they'll still be active in 2020. In the past they've either had quick turnarounds between albums or Alex has gone off to do TLSP between them. I think now they could go the way of other stadium acts like Muse and tour the album for over 2 years before disappearing for another few years before their next album.

Basically, now that they're becoming (as it was put in another thread) elder statesman, and taking longer between albums, if Alex doesn't rush off to do TLSP again after this album (I feel like he won't) they'll be able to do a monster tour and dry up a lot of demand because the 5 years or so until their next album will definitely replenish demand.

Also with it being the anniversary they could just play as a one off or extend their tour to work it in.

They're doing every European festival around Glastonbury this year so it would make more sense for them to be elsewhere in the world come next June and return later on for a much bigger tax-deductible pay day at Reading and Leeds, in my opinion.

They've also got a little more affinity with Leeds/Reading. They made a massive jump to headliners way back when. I remember seeing them in a tiny tent (and I didn't know who they were), then they headlined 12 months later.

Although I do still have a sneaking suspicion they'll be at Glastonbury next year...

They headlined Glastonbury (2007) before Reading/Leeds (2009).

They were subs to Muse in 2006 so maybe that is what you were thinking of?

They were pretty much elder statesmen by 2011 and 2013. They're driven by creating music, they all worked on other stuff during the hiatus. I'd put money an album by 2020.

i know next to nothing of the Arctic Monkeys and I'd still be happy to take that bet.

I would say an album by the end of 2020 isn't impossible. I get the points against it, but Alex Turner has never gone more than 2 1/2 years between albums in his career. And if this one goes down badly, which I still think it will to a lot of people, they might not want to sit on it for ages.

The comparison that once Muse got to playing stadiums along came the big gaps between albums, so this will be the same...kinda true. But it was under 3 years between The 2nd Law and its critically acclaimed follow-up, a gap that would barely take us into 2021.

I'm not gonna back it happening but not gonna rule it out either. I think a lot of the dried up demand would quickly resurface if they put out something more commercial.

Then again it probably took longer to write one song from TBHC than it took to write the whole of Drones.

I think they'll definitely be around next summer. They're doing the classic band cycle of arena shows in the Autumn then announce a stadium or two for next year straight afterwards. I'd put money on a couple of huge outdoor shows - Sheffield and either Wembley or the London Stadium being announced as soon as the arena tour finishes in October. Then next February, well after they've sold out, they're announced for GF (they won't be the first announcement either).

Yeah of course they'll be around next Summer but was his point not that, due to doing most of the early Summer European festivals this year, they'll probably go elsewhere (America or wherever) at that time next year and therefore be more likely to do R&L than Glasto.

I'm not convinced they won't be at Glasto, though.

Depends if they want the big stadium money, most of those sort of gigs in this country take place June/early July, which puts them in prime GF territory. It's easy to imagine them taking two/three weeks out of their international schedule to pop back here to do a stadium or two and Glastonbury.

They always seem to have shied away from doing stadiums and I can't really see Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino being the album where they decide to make that switch. A couple of big shows are probably in the offing but if they're not stadiums, they don't have to route it around the football season.

They could come back in the middle of a US tour like U2 did but I'm not seeing any big reason why Arctic Monkeys have to play Glastonbury again so soon at the expense of another paycheck and why the festival needs them back desperately either.

Tbf they're in Europe around R+L as well this year so I guess the same could be said to me about that. I just definitely feel like R+L know how important getting Arctic Monkeys would be and will be willing to pay through the nose to get them regardless of how recently they played so that's a huge advantage for them over Glastonbury. And the way Melvin just shrugged about not having them this year and said "they have their own plans" instead of bemoaning how they really tried or whatever makes me think he's already locked them down for 2019.

Not using any of this as a reason to 'rule them out' or whatever, just my take on it. I see what people mean about them joining Muse and Coldplay as a big British band who are gonna play regularly for the rest of their existence but Coldplay only play Glastonbury out of all the festivals in the world nowadays, and Muse play R+L (and all other big European festivals) at a similar rate to how they play Glastonbury and I think Arctic Monkeys will be closer to doing what the latter does.

Could this not just be him trying to save face, though? No one wants to look desperate in public, so I could see him saying that even if he went all out to get them.

If he was bothered about looking desperate in public, he'd never have asked Fall Out Boy to headline his festival.

It could be an amazing headline slot, he's got a strong enough back catalogue. And I don't think anyone with a cursory knowledge of his songs would be trying  to work out which song he's singing.

So wrong I'm afraid.

Cursory seems a reasonable expression mind.

Doubt they'd book Drake and Kendrick in the same year and I think Foals need to release another album before they could do it. I don't know much about Drake but doesn't he have an album coming out soon? He could do it I reckon

coming out in june

Just checked and Damn only came out last year so good chance Kendrick will still be on the road next year. Are they due to have a big hip hop act headlining? It'll be 4 years since Kanye did it so its possible id say. Kendrick and Drake seem like the most likely options.

Only thing is he seems to demand a lot of money. Rumours that he's R&L's most expensive ever headliner and the ticket prices for his tour suggest he costs a lot to book. Can only hope him/his management see the other benefits to headlining Glastonbury.

I can see a trio of either Stormzy/Arctic Monkeys/Fleetwood Mac or Foals/Kendrick Lamar/Fleetwood Mac happening right now (maybe another indie band instead of Foals but I can't think of many except perhaps The 1975). In the second scenario that'd leave Arctic Monkeys (and probably Stormzy, too) at R&L.
