2019 Headliners

I could honestly see them being a sub this year and that being our big unexpected thing for this year, and headlining in two or three years’ time. Not saying that they should sub or don’t deserve headline but they could probably be tempted into playing even if possibly all three headliners are smaller fish than they are.

I think they could easily headline. It wouldn't be the strongest booking but certainly a great booking of a band getting bigger all the time.

Personally I think they are this years secret set / tbc. Gets around the R&L issue.

I know. I was trying my best not to open this debate. I could just imagine there being a surprise in that The 1975 appear on the poster out of nowhere.

The fuck would they be doing at Glasto then? Maybe if the headliners were Post Malone, Deadbeat Dad and Bad Girl Riri but ones The fooking Cure mate.

TBF anyone goes to Glastonbury. Loads of people in my work tried to get tickets and Ive had to have conversations explaining who The Beach Boys were. Its that big a deal, people want to go just for the craic even if they arent music fans.

I mean how many festivals can sell out without a single band being announced.

We've all been saying The Cure are a more niche headliner than usual and predicting a tiny crowd for them tho. Also I've not watched a Pyramid headliner in years, doesn't mean I'm not the target.

I wasn't saying that about glasto-goers but the wider public.

A public - a Glastonbury-going public, as it happen (the locals) - who I know went 'who?' when Muse were announced as headliner, and a public where a sizable number went 'who?' when Arcade Fire were announced.

I reckon The Strokes would have less penetration with the general public than both of those did.

In terms of name recognition in the wider British public I'd say 1. Muse (comfortably, as well) 2. The Strokes 3. Arcade Fire. The exact opposite of how good they are. It's a weird one with Arcade Fire, so many (in the UK at least) seem to have missed them and I was one of them for a good few years. I reckon Arcade Fire have been the band I've encouraged more mates to give a go more than any other (everyone is already familiar with my other favourites).

Who are these people who've never heard of Muse though? That's Madness.

it was a while back, at the time they (1st?) headlined, and between being announced for Glasto and headlining one of (I forget which) R/L or V the same year they got that wider public penetration.

But you know who The Strokes are.

Thought you watched Radiohead anyway?

Exactly so why do they need to avoid confusing those?

I don't know a single person who could name a Muse song, album or be able to pick them out on an identity parade.

I agree. Arcade Fire in particular are a weird one, would only ever headline, yet their mainstream UK exposure seems minuscule

Ah fuck, I forgot about that. I actually only watched 45 minutes before leaving, so my point still stands.

Also you can't prove that I know who The Strokes are.

That’s very harsh. Most would know SBH and bits of every album bar the first up to Resistance.

Surely that depends where you are from and what type of music you like?

No one round here would have a clue about MUSE.

They are a bit of an enigma arent they... they are a headline act for sure but as you say they arent really that mainstream... thier aloofness has made them better maybe?

Considering they do everything usually, I reckon everyone knows at least five songs...

I know who Muse are and I could not name you 5 songs. I even gave them a listen when I read they sounded like Depeche Mode.

There is not a cat in hells chance that people round here could name 5 Muse songs.

I was one of the few that got super excited about the Kanye announcement. Went along to it and was left super disappointed. Bad vibe in the crowd around me too, seemed like thousands flocked to just talk and take the piss throughout.

If the strokes do play and you don’t like them, please don’t go just to slag them off and talk through the whole set. It really sucks for the people who’ve gone to have a good time. Loads more to do on site that would create a positive vibe.

It does seem like the band have off days with the live shows. I’ll be going along to support them for sure. If Kasabian, the killers and Florence can headline the pyramid, the strokes definitely can.

All I can think if is that it's critical success, which is daft (although I love the idea of need a 7.0 average on pitchfork to headline ?); or their US popularity kind of spilling over, but that only goes so far, aren't Cage the Elephant for example big over their, but relatively unheard of over here nowadays?

We can agree to disagree. I reckon they would. People would know: Psycho, SBH, Knights of Cydonia, Starlight, Hysteria and Uprising.

I reckon Bellamy has a distinctive voice and are big enough people to know but fair enough that’s Kasabian where you know the song, not the band.

Yeah you could play someone some Muse songs and they would be like "oh yeah i know that song" but no idea who the band are haha

Shocking really as they are pretty awesome

/runs off to put some Muse on spotify
