Lineup 2018

Why are they the only acts with females in who can headline then?

Probably something to do with generations of males being encouraged to take up guitar music and females being discouraged and not being given anywhere near as many opportunities and therefore struggling to become headliners at the UK's biggest predominantly guitar music festival.

Because of years of booking with no focus on equality?

Or by squeezing out certain bands to focus on a small pool? You can't have Florence and Paramore headlining every year, so instead of moaning, maybe ask why they're not booking Arcade Fire?

That would make it three then. Any other suggestions?

What point are you actually trying to make with Arcade Fire? They're not that suited to the festival, but there are two female fronted bands who are perfectly suited and giving headline slots to male fronted bands who are in a worse position to headline makes no sense.

@Chinaski_ Are you anti-female bands being deliberately booked or just anti-bands you don't like being booked?

No I said they should book the best bands available. What I don't agree with is just booking someone so you can say "look at us, aren't we great we tick boxes". If they book a band with a female, then i don't see why it needs to become an issue and celebrated, rather than them just being another band booked.

So who are suited to the festival then?

Your assumption that they'd only book bands with women in 'just to tick boxes' is part of the problem

Man a huge reason as to why 90% of the acts big enough for those top slots are mostly all-male is because of females not being encouraged into what is seen as a masculine hobby in playing the guitar/drums or being into rock music, whereas males are encouraged into this. This ranges from kids' parents all the way to major festivals. A festival like R&L actively giving slots to female acts who are suitable and deserving over all-male acts is a start in changing these attitudes and addressing the balance. No one is saying they should just start booking any old females, but that they should be making a conscious effort to book some more and try to address the balance.

When have they gone to book Ellie or Adele?

Tbh after halsey last year Id love to see Banks/Lorde/FKA Twigs etc. Plus more people like Sigrid and Off Bloom is fine by me. Charli XCX/SOPHIE or really any PC artists would also be great.

More electronic wise there are loads: Mollie Collins, Alison Wonderland, Rezz etc. would all be great bookings.

Female hiphop is in a pretty great place nowadays too. Ray BLK, Little Simz, Lady Leshurr would all get good receptions (plus I would love a Missy Elliot appearance tbh)

In terms of bands, Against the current, Anteros, Wolf Alice, Fickle Friends, Black Honey, HAIM, Creeper, Halestorm, The Xx, CHVRCHES, PVRIS, Yonaka, Oh Wonder, Phantogram, Tonight Alive, Pale Waves and Marmozets. Not to mention potential headlines from Florence and Paramore.

Heck, even someome like Declan Mckenna who has a female drummer and guitarist would be a good booking that also encourages diversity.

    • No idea how it'll work in a festival setting but really enjoying Prewn at the moment.
    • Lineup announced, with the dates having been pushed back to 12th and 13th September. Tickets on sale tomorrow 8:30am.   12th September Chaka Khan Jack Savoretti Lulu Emeli Sande Texas ABC The Script   13th September Simple Minds Deacon Blue Level 42 Appleton Blue James Blunt Cast   I think it’s a pretty weak lineup compared to previous years to be honest - and think it’s quite lazy they’ve gone down the Scottish route so much (not sure Simple Minds would be classed as a headliner elsewhere in the UK).

    • I've been saying that it's been due for years. I don't recall anything but good luck, mainly, since 2016.   If we could get the bad year out of the way during the fallow year, and return to glorious sunshine next year, that would be most welcome.
