Hayfever

Mrs Woffy will be at Glasto this year pregnant.

(So a slightly more modified festival - behaviour wise - for us both!)

My main worry is that she's a hayfever sufferer and her GP has said they can't prescribe her usual tablets due the steroid in them.

Any other (natural?) alternatives out there?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would also like to retract all my previous comments abour Dr Ben being a lazy git!!! ;)

Woffy x

I swear by these

http://www.boots.com/en/Benadryl-Allergy-Plus-12-capsules_867878/

Not sure if they contain anything she wouldn't be allowed to take, but they've been doing the trick so far. Covers both hayfever and rhinitis, so if Glasto is a dusty one they'll be useful.

so I take these (they can be taken multiple times a day which is useful) alongside nose spray/drops (http://www.boots.com/en/Otrivine-Adult-Nasal-Spray-10ml_852404/) and eye drops.

I remember the hayfever in 2013 being particularly bad, and I woke up on the Thursday with both eyes swollen, and my left eye forced shut by the swelling and discharge. Absolutely grim. Medical centre sorted me out a treat though, so if it all goes south I would go there for help.

Give these a try...

And so long as she doesn't mind doing her Rudolph impression a few times a day...

Beconase nasal spray. Start now with a couple of squirts twice a day in each nostril.

this is prescription only yeah? or maybe it isn't based on a google search (that I should have done earlier haha)

Nah - over the counter in any chemist. Though it works best if you start using it a few weeks before the fest.

i'm using it at the moment and have been for about a week so my timing seemingly is quite good! I might buy another 100 spray though because it will most likely run out on the wednesday/thursday of the fest...

I used to use Clarityn but it never quite cured it completely. Benedryl and Peritine did nothing for me at all.  I started using this last year and it's been amazing, only rarely feel out of sorts

I suffer quite badly with Hay fever and weirdly I never get it at Glasto!?  I also didn't get it while pregnant, which was great!  That was 2013 :)

I think you would need to check on antihistamine though as I am sure they are contraindicated in pregnancy, I checked when I first fell pregnant then subsequently it wasn't an issue :)

Hope you all (and the bump) have an amazing festival :)

my current method has been loratadine / cetrizine in the morning, using beconase twice daily and opticrom when necessary.

I also have prevalin as a backup...

been mostly working during these very high pollen days of late, but even then sometimes my eyes still get itchy!

Same here. Have to get them on prescription though.

Hi woffy, check with the doctor as I was told the old school piriton was ok ( not piriteze) when pregnant - the only thing was they were like sleeping pills and I literally couldn't open my eyes about 5 mins after taking one so they were no use to me, but they may not affect Mrs Woof the same way. Vaseline in the nose is the best one and she can still use eye drops x

I don't have those hayfever tablets anymore cos they say it gives you dementia. I'm forgetful enough as it is.

Don't believe every headline you read and don't go around spreading information you haven't checked - this was phenomenally irresponsible journalism from several UK papers. They cited Benadryl because the US study was based around the brand, but Benadryl uses a totally different drug in the US than in the UK.

I believe you can get the actual drug tested in the UK on prescription, but not over the counter.

If you use any of the modern non-drowsy remedies (Loratadine, Certirizine Hydrochloride or Fexofenadine Hydrochloride etc) the dementia study has nothing to do with you.

I've just switched over to Fexofenadine (as one of the earlier posters mentioned) and tentatively very positive results so far. I was having to take Certirizine or Loratadine morning and night otherwise I'd wake up at 4am unable to breath or spend my working day sniffing and weeping, but only having to take one of these every 24 hours. Praise be!

Local honey?

Since I started eating local honey throughout the winter I have found my hayfever has reduced.  It's generally considered a more long-term treatment (plus don't you have to be careful with honey in pregnancy?)

On that note, don't bother with the stall selling pollen.  That made my hayfever worse!
