I've noticed this before and always wondered why people do it. It clearly makes no sense in the context in which it is used. Must be an American thing.

I often see other Americans going mad at them for getting it wrong. On the other hand, there are plenty of common English mistakes that I see on here that I rarely see on the tech sites I frequent!

I'm sure I read recently that derives from an idiom in Yiddish and thus is a bit of a cultural hand me down that - for obvious reasons - hasn't surfaced in Europe / the UK.

Firstly - It is so satisfying to watch the litter picking line each morning. It properly hits the spot.
