Gonna go out on an unpopular limb here and say that IICON probably could stand to be just a lil bit more populist, the space felt far too big for the crowds it was pulling in 2019. Either that or stick something else in that field at least, felt very sparse as it was.

I have to agree with you - it's a big space with a big budget so it can't be too niche can it.  Whilst we had some good times there in 2019 it never really felt like it reached it's potential in terms of pulling in the people.

That's a fair comment, @stuie, as was @Winslow Leach's. I guess what I meant was that I very much support the Block9 team in always trying to innovate in their curation, rather than take the 'easy' route of the same old huge names that are guaranteed floor fillers. Not that I wish in anyway that area to be too niche or cliquey, but that I also would hate to see it lose its edge and philosophy. Somewhere in the middle sweet-spot is what we need.

As somebody who’s enjoyment of electronic music largely lies within the ‘bangers’ territory, it would be a shame if the bookings for that stage stayed too niche or out there, as it’s such a cool looking setup - probably the best the festival currently has - and deserves big crowds, but that ain’t gonna happen if people turn up and the music is sending them west when what they want to do is dance. Obviously there’s a market for that kind of stuff, and I’m not expecting or wanting chart hits or shit like that, but there’s definitely gotta be some element of commercialism in there if they want people to turn up and stick around. I don’t think I stayed there for more than a curious gander in ‘19.

I agree with all parties here, i do think that the wonky stuff was extremely welcome (especially as i've discovered more post-festival) , but one or two 'names' that would get me to stay there, check it out for longer etc. would be welcome - of course that's all down to personal taste. But maybe the whole spectacle of the stage itself left some people slightly underwhelmed at the acts that were on it?

on top of that, what calibre names could IICON afford to play it? Entirely unknown to me what size of acts they could get so it's a very open question. Money no object a Skream dubstep (or just normal) set there would be the one for me on that stage

I'm also currently toying with the idea of partiboi69 there, but also thinking it'd be firmly out of place simultaneously/hilariously

Skream often plays a few sets at the fest, so don't think money is an issue when getting him to play, so wouldn't be surprised if he was there this year

Didn’t really know where else to put this so I’m sorry if this is out of place (and also shows me to be a very casual dance/electronica fan), but does anyone reckon there is a chance Calvin Harris may join the lineup or is he too expensive? He has a Ibiza residency the Friday but is free Saturday and Sunday

There are strong rumours of him playing on Pangea under his Love Regenerator alias

Sorry if it's already been mentioned but could Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs be one to expect? Has a new album coming out in July.

Heartbreak was one of the dance songs of 2020 for me

Would be a fan of this too - that album with bonobo was fantastic

Personally would rather him play his old stuff under his original alias but would take that

There was discussion briefly on this forum (not necessarily this thread) that maybe there was an outside chance of him being the Saturday night Other Stage headliner. There was nothing to base it on, just blind speculation really. Given the information that a few trusted posters on here have shared, the Love Regenerator Pangea set seems more likely

Now *he* would be great on Iicon

Yeah agree. Or even the Park Stage like in a slot Jamie Xx had in 2015. He's massive now but Pangea is just a weird set up for that kind of music. Feels more like a bass / dnb type 'arena' for me.

Same thing though right with Four Tet. I watched fatboy / Eats Everything in that field and it was souless. i just think it suits an Andy C and co far more.

Regarding IICON, it's finding a balance.

Yes keep it fresh/ innovative but there are DJs/ acts that are very big but still have a huge amount of respect amougst other DJs and still play relatively unknown/ underground music. There aren't many who tick both boxes but I do feel there needs to be the odd name there that does. Fabric on a Saturday night tend to be rather good at finding this balance.

I'm confident they will get it right this year though.
