Glastonbury Festival bans sale of Native American-style headdresses

I've got this great business idea - who fancies financing me?

With all those feathers going spare from not selling headdresses these can be made instead, fashionistas will love them, and hipsters can still piss off the people behind them trying to watch a band. But, we'll have to move fast before Christians start a petition to get Angel Wings banned - cos people who aren't actual angels are wearing them!

It is a really good debate.

I am still not in agreement with the ban, purely because I think there is just as much other stuff on sale that is equal in terms of 'ability to insult'.

There are so so many hats/ t-shirts/ wigs at Glastonbury that it would be a crazy task to identify each background/historical meaning and work out who around the world, given the voice, would oppose someone else wearing it. I can't help but think that there could be more done to raise attention to the plight of the Native Americans than this petition against the headdress, started by a UK resident. A lot of people find these head dresses beautiful and don't necessarily wear it to mock the historical meaning!

I noticed on one of the EONM articles that they are not even accepting Pharrell's apology for his front cover image:

The nonapologies are harmful because they do nothing to get to the root of the problem and shift blame from the appropriator BACK to American Indians. Now it is on us to try and convince the world that we are worthy of better treatment because Pharrell, and Fallin, and Stefani, and Coyne, and Cyrus, and…the list goes on…”apologized”. Then the real issues get lost after this blame-shifting because then the hate comes out, the blood quantum stuff comes out, the “I’m part-Indian too and I don’t find it offensive” stuff comes out when we are defending our culture and children by trying to convince people THIS IS NOT OKAY AND NEVER WILL BE.

Seems a little bit harsh to me. The man apologised, and it looks as though his cover has helped raise attention in any event. I read somewhere that the turquoise coloured necklaces and head garments are okay for the natives to sell on to people as this colour doesn't represent an honour. Could we not see more sales of this authentic style (to raise money for the Native support groups) that makes all parties happy?

Really interesting debate going on here. Personally I think restricting the sale to approved vendors makes sense and does address the respect issue, as well as the 'well I bought one from a casino' etc. arguments. I would like to think that this is an effort to at least screen who is selling them.

An outright ban would be a bit ludicrous, unlike for Bass Coast (not Best Coast, by the way), where given the location, I think it made sense.

I do also agree that it feels a somewhat random cause for Glastobury to take on (although not out of character), but I think the issue is gaining a huge amount of international attention and of course that will affect their decisions. It is making news left, right and centre out here in the States, and seeing how many of the bigger festivals here, in the UK, and Europe do have a very international audience (it's amazing to see how many Glasto reruns you see on TV over here), and of course book a great deal of international acts, I can see how it's an issue being addressed by the entire international festival community.

Of course there are plenty of other causes that are just as worthy of attention as this, arguably even more so, but this issue is currently where the media's attention is in regards to morality in entertainment and the like (arguably with the exception of the variety of scandals going on in the NFL over here at the mo). I would assume that most people on here agree that isn't the way the world should be, but it's undeniable that it's the reality.

Differing construction. Wigwams usually take longer to put up than tipis and their frames are usually not portable like a tipi.

You can't have a tipi bam.

Seriously though, This is a wig wam

Tipis look like they do at glasto.

well fuck me, I never knew that. Thank you my learned friends.

Yup, the main differences are the shape (tipi pointed and wigwam domed), the portability (tipi fully portable, wigwam usually permanent or semi-permanent and often left behind if the inhabitants move on), and also the areas they are found. The tipi is more common on the Great Plains, and the wigwam (or wikiup) is particularly common in the Northeast.
