He knew they would sell as he knows a good tune when he hears one. Luckily, he's rather good at writing anthemic stonkers. Which brings me to the issue of 'challenging' music, and of 'progression'. The Beatles and Bowie developed and progressed as they went along and were superb. Fair play to them. Not every act wants to, or is capable of it. ACDC haven't progressed, Buddy Guy hasn't progressed and i think nothing less of them for it. As long as they are banging out good tunes, i can take or leave progression thank you.

A band i always think of when i hear progression is Radiohead, and it makes me shudder. If you're looking for the 90s band who made 2 great albums then produced a river of shit, look no further than them. The Bends and OK Computer are magnificent, the latter arguably the last masterpiece released in music. Kid A was interesting but for some reason they have made the inexplicable decision to stop making songs that had me in tears of joy, gasping at their brilliance, songs you wanted to sing, to churn out increasingly duff noodlings that now fill me with dread when i put the headphones on. But hey, they've progressed and evolved. It's challenging. Another dirty word. Who has ever put an album on for the first time, quivering with excitement, and thought "I really hope this challenges me or i'll be furious"?

Originality, progression and surprise are only good if the tunes are up to snuff. They are not pre requisites of good music. A nice bonus perhaps.

The problem with that is that bands who don't progress become a bit of a joke band in the end. Sort of cartoon rock and roll.

See AC/DC, Status Quo, Kiss, The Darkness. Oasis aren't far off.

I love(d) AC/DC but was bored shitless after 45 minutes when I saw them live. Its the same song over and over.

I usually (not alaways) look out for something that is a bit challening. You're just showing how marvelously inverted snobbery works now

at least AC/DC, or Status Quo, or ZZ Top have an idea of something they're trying to do. It has a 'feel', it does what it's supposed to do.

I have no idea what Oasis ever tried to do, beyond make money, which is the lamest reason for doing anything.

Kiss can fuck off though... :P

Kiss are purely in it for the cash. Shamelessly and unapologetically so too.

Oasis wrote a few decent tunes but at the end of the day are a very limited band. They were never going to turn into anything else.

The band that recorded Definitely Maybe for example. So so weak. Outside of punk I'm not sure if I can name a weaker band musically. Guigsy, Tony McCarroll, Bonehead. A pub band. Buskers of limited ability basically.

And Noel - who has the stiffest fingers of any lead guitar player on earth.

Just like their albums, each gig I saw got worse and worse and worse.

Oasis were trying to make people sing and feel good, which they achieved in large numbers. I feel you are a little one eyed - pot, kettle - when it comes to Oasis. Surely you are aware you are stretching credulity to use Status Quo as a stick to beat Oasis with. Lets not get silly.

you, who think Oasis is the best band since The Beatles, are suggesting I'm stretching credulity (?)

Oasis haven't done anything that's as good as Caroline.

I reckon it's vital to remember that sales figures, especially in the light of Lou Reed carking last week, mean precisely fuck all. Velvet underground sold appallingly, Oasis sells a shitload.

And the Eccentronic Research Council can't shift 300 copies of their latest 7". It's a c**ts' game.

Embarrassing. I won't bother to name the 150+ tracks that are better.

Furthermore, i would of course concede that The Beatles are untouchable, but i would hold their catalogue up to anyone else's. If other people disagree, and i feel some of you do, that's fine, each to their own. But i cannot and will not stand idly by while other people besmirch their proud name and glorious achievements. That i will not allow. Oh no. Some of the criticism is beyond the pale.

Perhaps i should have put that sentence in capitals and added 5 exclamation marks to make clear it was a bit of Basil Fawlty style OTT rage. I thought it was obvious.

why do you think the da vinci code sold millions of copies, whereas the wonderful book whose ideas it "borrowed" - foucault's pendulum - sold (relatively) bugger all?

because people are thick idiots.

<RADIOHEAD KLAXON>

yeh it would have been much better if they'd just made 8 albums that all sounded exactly the same as ok computer

I mean I know you are an obvious wind up, but there actually are oasis fans on this forum that genuinely do have your beliefs.

They are a curious breed.

Ok I'm bored - I'll bite. (And I'm no Oasis hater).

Are you saying, in all honesty, that Oasis's whole back catalogue is the equal to the whole back catalogue of:

Tom Waits

Neil Young

David Bowie

Led Zeppelin

The Smiths

The Rolling Stones

The Who

to name just 7 off the top of my head.

Am not denying that "they did actually make some great" songs but bloody Nora!

But that is totally different to "their catalogue to be the equal of any act anyone feels like mentioning."

"They're the one for me" is subjective and no-one can argue with that sort of sentiment.

Although dismissing Waits and Who out of hand should be a hanging offence. And your homework now is to go and listen to Exile on Main St and come back here and say they are a singles band. :banghead:

They're is no way this guy is genuine. An oasis fan would NEVER have low as one of their favourite Bowie albums

Isn't music also something to do with age? Certain bands or songs will take you back to key times in your life or places where you first encountered that music.

I fell in love with this when I first went to France on a school exchange when I was 14. It was a life changing month for me. I discovered France, girls, wine, cigarettes and got away from my mum for a month.

I can't hold it up or claim it to be great music but it will always be a bit special to me because of the memories of that time of my life.

You admitted that you can't though by suggesting radiohead haven't made an accessible album since ok computer

    • Reading seems to have sold really well this year from the posts they've made re. tickets. I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon, I think for the vast majority in here (myself included) it just doesn't cater to us. That said, if I was still under the age of 18 I'd be thrilled with the Reading lineup this year (not so much Leeds).
