The whole thing about Biffy Vs Trent is weird. Trent's rage at Biffy was completely unjustified in my eyes, his issues should have been with the promoter themselves. I can understand his annoyance, watch the documentary on their Vevo about how much effort went into their stage setup, then on the day, they couldn't make it happen. This lead to them having to wing it at Leeds, seemingly, as the setlist was massively different to everywhere else, song choice and structure. Reading's set was actually closer to the rest of their shows. Every other festival made the stage show work, headline or not, so really not sure what went wrong at R/L's, but you'd surely think the failing to cater for NIN's show falls on FR and not on Biffy themselves. Really enjoyed NIN (and Biffy) at Leeds though, bit disappointed there was no stage show, and the crowd could have been better, but yeah, still a great show.

Yeah it did actually take them 50 minutes to chuck all of Biffy's shit on stage. The streamer launcher things, the runway, a shit load of lights, and that bloody tree.

But I'm sure NIN still had a light show? They didn't have big ass screens, but they still had big ass lights

So how come the hundreds of other festivals they played all over the world managed to cater for them just fine? I can't see how they had 0 issues elsewhere, but only at Reading and Leeds, and it not being down to the promoters.

None, obviously, but they subbed plenty of other bands, bands who would have also had big stage shows. At the end of the day it's a moot point. Festivals would have known of their stageshow, he'd been banging on about it in the press months before the festival - so even the general public knew. For some reason it couldn't be catered for at Reading and Leeds, and only Reading and Leeds, which is obviously a failing of the festival, regardless of Biffy's stageshow, as it's the festivals job to make sure it all runs smoothly.

It's not a moot point, it's a very valid point as it answersa your question of why it only happened at R&L - Biffy had quite an extravagent stage set-up that prevent other bands having the same (as have Muse and Blink in recent years) and as headliners were given priority. You seem to think that FR weren't aware of NIN's stage show, whereas it's more likely that they just gave priority to the headliners. Not every band on the bill gets to demand whatever stage set-up they want.

"For some reason it couldn't be catered for at Reading and Leeds, and only Reading and Leeds," - it's the Biffy thing.

"which is obviously a failing of the festival, regardless of Biffy's stageshow, as it's the festivals job to make sure it all runs smoothly." - the failing would have been not allowing the headliner, a festival favourite playing arguably the biggest and most important show of their lives, to have their stage set-up.

Don't get me wrong, there's clearly been some miscommunication that FR in retrospect should have been keen to avoid given the tantrum that followed, but at the end of the day you can't solely blame it on them for not cutting short what the headliner wanted just to accomodate a lesser act. Part of that has to go on Trent, who was obviously mistaken in thinking that he could just rock up with whatever stage show he wanted.

Depends whether his stage show had been in the negotiations for them playing. If the NIN attitude was "we're happy to sub, but we want to be able to do x, y and z for our stage show" and FR went "sure, fine", it's their fault. If they'd said "We're doing a stage show, that cool?" and not tried to even hint at some of the extravagance of it, then Trent and his agent have to take some of the blame.

Yeah unfortunately nobody here knows the exact details or what was discussed at the time of the booking. His behaviour since has exactly endeared people to the possibility that he was reasonable and mature in his expectations and dealings, but then again if he hadn't behaved in that manner nobody when even know there was a problem.

    • So, what would the weather have been like at this year's festival?   It's been shambolic around here, the rain is soul destroying and showing no sign of letting up, bar odd sporadic days here and there. Disgraceful for June.   What's it like down there? Have we had a lucky escape?...

    • belated thanks for this ended up going, was a good evening and a great venue with a cracking beer selection (give the festival a few tips on that). Never been in before despite reasonably local.       Main takeaways from the film (as someone who didnt go for much later). The festival has changes a lot since then apart from the Green Fields that looked the exact same.  Me and my mate both agreed that Shambala is today than Glastonbury.   Cool piece of merch aswell.
