I guess you arent a big radiohead fan? What do you consider to be the "hits" that would please the random festival punter?

Creep

Karma Police

Fake Plastic Trees?

Genuine question here. I see them as an album band, I really am not sure what their biggest hits are considered to be.

I'm not even a Radiohead fan, but Radiohead playing mainly recent stuff at a gig (even a headlining slot at a major festival) is not really like going to see The Proclaimers and them not playing 500 Miles. They don't owe any of their success to any specific songs, their recent material sells by the bucket load so why not play it? I went to see Morrissey this summer and there was a lot of bitching from attendees moaning they'd been "ripped off" because he didn't play Irish Blood, First of the Gang to Die, There is a Light or This Charming Man, well no he didn't, but he did happen to play 2 + hours worth of songs from his 30 year back catalogue, if you want to hear hits go to a Take That show.

Generally speaking, Radiohead tend not to make excellent festival headliners because they're a very introverted band who (quite rightly) tend towards pleasing themselves than their listeners, which is often a surefire way to alienate any casual fans in attendance.

I can't say it bothers me, I enjoy all of their work (bar Pablo Honey, and TKOL which I found to be quite dull).

I love the sudio version, but then i love all of their abums. Saw TKOL played live for the first ime in the Park last time out.... blew me away. Having Clive there with Phil on drums is awsome. If they were to play they would almost fill the Pyramid, i reckon 2/3rds pretty much as in 2005, i only saw this on video but you could see it was 2/3rds full. When i saw them at Finsbury park in 2008 they had just realeased " In rainbows" but the set was nearly 2 hours nad consisted early on of in Rainbows stuff and then went on to play a range of material across all the other albums, such as : "misamotosis" and " The national Anthem " etc. They mix it up every show which makes them great live as they don't get bored playing the same tunes everynight, as has been said.

pablo honey got to number 22 in the charts, the bends got to number 4, while every other album got to number 1, By your reasoning doesnt that mean they should play fewer songs off the bends, as the other albums are clearly more popular?

Can't see it being Radiohead unless they are a replacement for the Stones. I'm thinking Atoms For Peace will be there (despite what the manager said a while ago) unless the above situation arises. They have a new album to promote and what not, will probably have more shows to shift tickets for, and I think a Radiohead headline slot would only be to help out if needed. Could potentially see AFP headlining a smaller stage to compete with the Stones if they are around

I can understand that some people just want to see what they would define as 'the hits' and why they might be disappointed if they don't play them (or play them sparsely mixed in with songs some people don't like/know). I feel similiarly about the cure, who i saw once and haven't bothered again. You can look at their setlists online - if you don't like what you see watch someone else.

Personally i don't need to see radiohead on the pyramid this year - i'd rather see atoms for peace and rh the following year, with a set heavily featuring their next album.

I agree totally, but think that bands should maybe do more of a greatest hits setlist at festivals (esoecially Glastonbury when tickets are sold before line ups announced). Acts like Radiohead who mix up there setlists every night and play lots of album and less well-known tracks are great for their own shows, but look at the stick Bruce has got on these boards (some of it from people who like him) compared to the adulation Bowie gets for doing a greatest hits set - something he hadn't been doing at the time.

Russy's right - if you're an artist whose output has noticeably deteriorated in quality over the years, then you should maybe accept the fact you will need to rely slightly on older material for a good set.

In Rainbows is arguably Radiohead's best album, and KoL not too shabby, so it is ludicrous to think they're going to play the same set as 2003 when those albums didn't exist. It isn't really their fault that they've moved on - and if fans can't be arsed to invest in the new material then expect to miss out...

    • Hush cancelled with a similar event now taking place at EartH and Cate Le Bon doing her own show, maybe others have rearranged gigs?
    • Yeah I find it strange, if they were just a silly act then they wouldn't be headlining the 3rd stage. The likes of vengaboys yes but they aren't doing their own sizeable arena dates.  That looks very weak for what they could actually get, but GC aren't playing 3rd main stage with The 02 and the Coop arena and in a same slot that KSE are. MIW aren't carrying those two dates either, neither are Turnstile and Parkway Drive tickets didn't play out. You gotta do better than Ghost, Blink and Deftones though.    I think you are a bit even if that is not the intention. I'm genuinely shocked they booked them for the avalanche and I think it'll be rammed out of the tent. While ADTR will obviously get a lot too, many Download attendees will had the chance to see them at Slam Dunk. I think 90s fest getting Scooter was class and while there would have been some Download crossover, the Slam Dunk crossover given acts you get on the avalanche will be a different level.
