I watched '71 yesterday, thought it was brilliant. Gritty, well made, terrifying in parts (in as much as it is based upon the real events of belfast in the 70's). Couple of serious "wtf" moments in it too.

Loved that film, have you seen Starred Up? Not as good as '71 imo but another superb performance from O'Connell.

You just described every Bond film ever made :P  All utter piss....

At least it didn't suffer from the stutter/flashing action scenes that you find in most movies these days. The appalling editing of most action scenes in movies of this era should come with a warning for epileptic sufferers. I wonder if it's just cheaper to make em that way or it's supposed to raise excitement. Doesn't work for me, should be banned.

saw Spectre the other day... it was okay, but fell pretty far in to generic Bond territory. had far too many little winks and nods towards the older Bonds which i thought was pretty unnecessary/overwhelming. Christoph Waltz's villain was a bit shite/underused as well. 6/10

I saw it last week and during the film I thought 4/10.  By the next morning on reflection it had gone down to 2/10.  Lacked humour and the light touch and didn't enjoy the gratuitous violence - particularly the eyeball scene.  It felt that the franchise had run out of steam and was past its sell by date.

Didn't that start after Bourne film was a success and a few others didn't do as well as expected? Either way yeah, its shit (and Quantum of Solace's opening scene is one of the worst for it while we're talking Bond!)

But it had more humour than the other Craig films? :S Its one of those things I thought it did well in bringing back!

yeah the more i think about it the more i've realised how little i enjoyed it just seemed incredibly formulaic in my eyes - there were zero shocks to be had. Christoph Waltz's origin story was neither exciting nor shocking (it was fucking ridiculous, really), and everything else just seemed so done before. i think it's about on par with Quantum really. maybe this franchise of Bond has a 'only every odd number film can be good' thing set in place. i believe Daniel Craig has one left so fingers crossed he goes out with a bang rather than a thud, because Casino Royale and Skyfall are brilliant (the former the most imo - love that film)

I'm not sure Craig should have one more if I'm honest. He more than likely will, especially now he is quite heavily involved in their productions nowadays - which I'm not entirely convinced is the right thing to have.

And For some reason I think I prefer skyfall to CR, I can see the merits of both. And think CR holds up better as a stand alone film but Skyfall is a more enjoyable bond film for me.

By contrast to Mr Bond, went to see The Lady in the Van last night.  What a delightful film.  The clever use of two Alan Bennetts to represent his inner voice and emotional conflict over how to deal with Miss Shepherd worked well. Magnificent cast and a real 10/10.

Recently seen:

The Lobster - was enjoyable but the weirdness seemed a bit forced, I think Dogtooth pulls it off perfectly but with this one it missed it for me (6/10)

Love - underneath the very graphic sex there's actually quite a devastating story there, with a couple of great performances. Some sex scenes were great, others not so much. Lovely cinematography. (7.5/10)

Carol - the best I've seen this year, which isn't a lot admittedly. Everything comes together really well, love the whole feeling of it and the two lead performences are sublime (8.5-9/10)

Bloody hell! I am rather jealous! By Smart Casual you mean a Stormtrooper costume right? ;p

Oh also, I saw The Good Dinosaur today. I went so you don't have to. And, seriously, you don't have to.

Oh! Well that sucks, I was looking forward to it after Inside Out was so good!

Well, I actually didn't like Inside Out so you may see things differently to me. However, I did have a lot of good things to say about Inside Out, but I really do struggle to see anything good about The Good Dinosaur. I can see how Inside Out's characters, premise and tone appealed to a lot of people, I just found it really forced and trite. But with The Good Dinosaur, it's just incredibly boring and forgettable, its simplicity is bordering on lazy. I found it incredibly generic, and didn't see anything recognisably Pixar about it, it seemed like a much lesser animation studio making a rushed and ham-fisted attempt at making a Pixar film. Even the voice acting is bad, which is something I never thought I'd see in a Pixar film.

I'm very very down to the wire on a costume for Star Wars. Can anybody think of a cheap yet good one to go for? I really want to be Wedge Antilles, but helmet prices are outrageous, which is a shame as I'm pretty sure I can make the rest of the costume for under £25.

ha. cheers. nah not going as a stormtrooper, I'd somehow probably miss it :P

will try and see what I can get away with, but somehow think they won't be impressed

Stick to the dress code on the ticket. its not a fancy dress party. They can be strict about these things. You wouldnt want to miss an experience like this just cos you wanted to look like a nerd.
