Appalling announcements - Reef, McFly, Showaddywaddy - what next - tribute acts? Given that there's now around 40 confirmed and still a load of local/lower running order Musician stage acts to be announced I'm guessing there won't be many more 'name' acts to come other than those to be announced on the DiS stage which is now the festival's only hope it seems. There are a few on the bill I'd like to see but unless there's a day with enough going to merit the 40 odd quid(?) I won't be going this year. Great news if you like McFly and Example, i.e. you're twelve, but not for me thanks.

To be fair, there's plenty already announced for me to be entertained and Im just youtubing some of the stuff I dont know (most of it!!) and far from displeased so far, there is some stuff I'll definitely not be missing. I have a pal who came with her autistic son last year - its ideally located to take him to the cinema or shopping for a wee while if he needs a break. They came down from Oban and are doing so again this year and she is DELIGHTED with the Showaddywaddy announcement!I have no problem with it (Bearded Theory booked Wagner which I thought was brilliant, its a bit of fun!).

My concern is the alcohol policy. If it changes, it'll concentrate a lot of young kids getting blattered in the campsite and going in and out between bands which spoils the atmosphere in the 'arena' and promotes kids wolfing as much down as they can in as short a time as they can, and that's not good - caused a lot of issues at Kendal last year. Ive never not managed to sneak my own beer into an arena that doesnt allow it yet, but it does make it less enjoyable

eta

Rob Challice informs me Im worrying over nothing, the policy hasnt changed!

Line Up....APRIL FOOL ! please ?

My two mates, who join me every year and have not bought their earlybird tickets, are now 'downgrading' their sundae visit to probably just one day

instead of the whole weekend. As mentioned in someones earlier post on this thread the line seems to be aimed at a youger audience plus more broadly appealling acts !!!(no not 'chk chk chk' , just my astonishment) ,see summer sundae twitter feed, da kidz are taking over summer sundae.

I've had time to contemplate the line up after my initial re-action ('oh dear' ) , my thoughts are now 'its pants'.

sean, i have no real idea to be honest, as you know i no longer have any involvement in ssw whatsoever.

(and for the record, before anyone attempts to read anything into that, please dont, having a mother with serious illness was a significantly more pressing issue than organising another fringe).

like i said, to those who've already bought tickets, dont panic yet, if only because rob seems to like to specialise in booking someone at some point who will make heads turn, so i'd expect that to happen at some point. pretty much everyone in leicester went `really?` when mumford were booked, and that worked out. (and no i've no further knowledge on any lines ups whatsoever either).

whilst there hasn't been a band yet that has made punch the sky like an elbow/ Idlewild/ Belle & Sebastian or Lissie ( and bear in mind these maybe didn't do it for other people in those years) there is enough thats made me go Mmmmmm. I am Kloot, Maccabies, Coxon. but as ever with SSW it has already introduced me to Bellowhead, Chapel Club and 2:54 which is what i like about the festival.

yep I'm not fussed by example or Mcfly ( although i will be gutted if i miss Star Girl!)i appreciate they have to sell tickets to keep the festival going. would we all be complaining if the price had doubled but it was full of bands from the pages of uncut, Word Mojo, yes i bet we would. Rob and the team are trying to strike a balance i suppose and we only have half the bands announced so far.

As Andy says i bet there are a couple of surprises still to come, and remember last year around now when the boards were full of " oh no not Mumford, they're not Headliner material"? tend to recall the main stage area being rammed on Sunday night and maybe a couple of BRits since.

Have patience and judge the festival ideally after the event or at least when we have a full line up!

I for one will be there and am already looking forward to it.

one last thing, complaining about kids getting drunk at festivals? yeah like we never did that!

Andy, Whilst I agree with your analysis that it's no surprise that SSW is tainting towards those bands which will sell lots of tickets I wonder if the reason for the 'more diverse' scheduling this year has more to do with the increased financial risk on a certain agency in London - and less to do with the Council stipulating that this year 'has to be more commercial'?

Anyone else find it odd that on one hand there's lots of bullish talk about McFly headling on the website, yet in the mailout from eFestivals they're not even mentioned amongst the headline names, and mentioned in one brief sentence just above Shonen Knife?

A conscious decision to downplay an unpopular headliner to more experienced festival-goers?

Gutted by these announcements. Summer Sundae has changed so much, even since becoming a full 3 day event. When I compare the bands and general vibe of the place in 2007 (my first year) to last year, they were miles apart (apart from the indoor stage, which was consistently great as usual, but who wants to spend three days sat in Demontford Hall when it's sunny outside?). This year's lineup will only ensure that things continue to change for the worse (for me personally of course, can see there's tons of kids on Twitter who are really looking forward to seeing McFly!).

On the plus side, money freed up for Latitude!

The latest line up did leave me cold, but few things to get it in perspective

1) i still haven't had the chance to listen the bands i've never heard off.

2) the first line up announcement was cracking.

3) Drowned in sound still haven't announced their bag of indie goodies yet

The De Montfort Hall booklet came through the post this morning and the Summer Sundae double page is a complete mess - only McFly, Example and Caravan Palace are listed from Thursday's announcement, Raghu Dixit and Skinny Lister from the first list aren't, but also in the lineup are the Phantom Band and Factory Floor. Factory Floor are a dark industrial dancefloor outfit who have been compared to Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle. If they end up scheduled opposite Showaddywaddy it'll be my new favourite thing Summer Sundae has ever done.

Seems like a lot of people feel how I do, I just don't understand what is happening with this festival, it seems like they WANT it to fail, McFly as a headliner? Whilst I think McFly have a fanbase and they are decent enough, they just aren't a SSW headliner!

My first year was 2006 and we had Gomez, Elbow and Belle and Sebastian headlining!

With an amazing undercard.

Has Lattitude and such effected this festival so much it just can't get the names in anymore?

If I was booking SSW and they are trying to get a more pop mainstream audience you could get a great live act in like Travis and yes they are great live, and their stock has fallen greatly, im sure they would do it, whack The Feeling underneath and thats a great pop double header who still are credible enough IMO.

Then even more so take a risk and book Scouting For Girls as headliner, WAY more popular than McFly are these days and im sure they'd do it, to be able to say they headlined a festival, they would get a big crowd in, and the sub for them Id pick Paloma Faith, who is amazing live. Really puts on a great show.

Then you could have a indie day with some acts with a great back catalogue like Manics, Feeder double bill on main, maybe book Ash as DMH headliner up against Scouting for Girls, and dare I say it get in say Funeral For a Friend to headline DMH up against Travis.

Just a different choice of acts who wouldn't cost the earth but have the experience and would pull a crowd in.

Otherwise I can see SSW going under.

McFly is an odd choice, could only see them at T4 on the beach tbh.

Think Maccabees is a good choice still.

Think if they had Chase and Status as their poppy popular act instead, they have a very diverse fan base. McFly on the other hand..

I'm not sure, think it'll sell a few day tickets.

not being funny, but if you had a festival with travis, the feeling, scouting for girls, manics and feeder. then you'd have possible a festival with acts the majority of the audience had seen at least twice before, and frankly it would be one of the most boring middle of the road, mainstream festival line ups possible. in short....it would be v.

at least the concept of watching shonen knife (one of kurt cobains favourite bands), and showaddywaddy on the same bill is somewhat more bonkers and interesting?

The whole point of my post was, putting on a safe line up which wouldn't break the bank but would get the punters in, I think that line up would achieve that, you can put all bonkers and interesting artists on other stages and lower down the bill. Simple.
