Here's how I see it. At my ideal Glastonbury R.E.M. headline no question. But if the information that they're considering a non-headline slot is true then it's better than them not playing at all, no-one could question that. The only thing that concerns me is how long they'll get. An hour of them on stage would barely scratch the surface of a band that have been going over 30 years and are releasing their 15th album. Other stage headliner or a 'special guest' slot on the pyramid giving them longer on stage would be great.

Here's hoping that the weight of the world on Bono's shoulders does his back in again, so we can see R.E.M. fill in.

I don't rea;ly think that would be the case as those who didn't like both of these bands would only watch the one they wanted to see and then go elsewhere (asuming they have a brain and legs or other means of getting about, of course). Therefore the ones who seen either or both would in all probability think they were worth seeing. For the record I have seen them both (headlining seperately and on the bill at the same event Live 8) and each time I thought they were really good live and that is despite me thinking that Coldplay were long past their best with their last album, but it appears thay can still do it live.

I'd like to know what "it" is. I saw them at Glasto '05, when they were "at the top of their game" with X&Y, and I was bored senseless.

Anyway, for the hundreds, possibly thousands of people who pitch up at the Pyramid stage at noon and stay until midnight, Codplay would look pretty ordinary after REM - but then I'd argue those aren't particularly discerning people anyway, so it would be wasted on them.

Did anyone notice Emily's response on twitter about Prince a couple of days ago? "Yeah, we'd love to have him here.. one day we hope."

Yep, saw that, and have been surprised that no one has mentioned it till now.

But unfortunately it doesn't tell us anything useful. It could mean they've got him this year, or that they haven't.

If I had to make a guess about it based on the little I know of Emily I'd say that she's dropping a hint that they haven't (while being careful not to dismiss it entirely, so that the rumours don't move on elsewhere as a result and end up on the right act), but that's just a guess on my part and I could be wrong.

A bit of clarification needed on why the Bono remark is a 'shite thing to say.' Seems to have been accepted without argument. I don't particularly fancy U2 and the comment has about half a joke in it, not funny I can understand, but 'shite'? Has back pain transcended into taboo?

They are called Codplay aren't they?

To be serious for a minute, I'd probably have dilemma if faced with REM vs the Stones or Pulp. Never seen the Stones but slightly offput by the underwhelming Who in 2007, though I would imagine the Stones would do much more of a crowd-pleasing set, not having some crappy new concept album to plug. Pulp I've seen twice and would love to see again, and I can see them pulling off a Blur-like stellar reunion show. But then it's REM, who just boss it. Please don't make me decide for real...

U2 I'd only be interested in if they did a greatest hits jukebox to be honest.

Given the Stevie Wonder comment last year, I'd say noone really knows anything at all about Emily, and you probably are wrong! :P

I happen to know - because I've asked Emily about it - that the Stevie comment was 100% accurate at the time it was made. Stevie wasn't in the frame to play until sometime after she'd made that comment.

She was quite offended by the idea that everyone thought she'd been making misleading statements.

(i think we got stevie thanks to someone on here before xmas?)

all of the various stevie things that were going around before at least mid-January were baseless.

As far as I'm aware tho, the name first cropped up non here at around October/November 2009. It seems to be the case that that rumour grew into something (without having any basis), with (as one of many examples) the News of the World saying it was Stevie in early January 2010.

But Emily has insisted to me that Stevie was nowhere in the frame to play Glastonbury until some time after she made that tweet about him. If that's actually the case then I'm 100% convinced that they were hoping to get the Stones, and had to go and find someone else after they decided not to tour.

And if that's right about the Stones for last year, then I'm just about convinced that they'll be playing this year.

    • I love this festival but Mordor has got worse and worse to the point now that I dread going there. 10 years ago there just weren’t as many people, as many bottlenecks and there wasnt the need to arrive early to have a decent spot.
    • Aren't they against touring?
    • If my memory serves me right, it was the other way round - when PS 2022 lineup was released it was already confirmed that she plays Barcelona in May.
    • Cheers! And yep looks identical to Green day's scheduling
    • Reading all the feedback with interest.  If there are now 75,000 tickets officially sold, plus who knows how many more people blagging in - then on the Friday evening and Saturday in particular, it's not ridiculous to suggest there's 50,000 people at Mordor, which is a stadium gig - except with much worse sight lines, an inferior PA, and far less bars and toilets. The Thursday evening in 2022 was of course infamous but on the Friday night for Beck I was trapped about 150m from the stage, surrounded by chatters, and with no prospect of getting nearer the stage.  With hindsight that was when I realised the fest had one way or another fundamentally changed.  Also noting on Reddit that some folk didn't enjoy the Cure or Gorillaz because the sets were "too long".  In future bands may be better received if they actually just play their top 10 Spotify songs then get back off the stage.
